Blue Jays MiLB Player of the Year: Addison Barger

MiLB.com photo/credit – Mark Steffens Addison Barger was the leading hitter in the Blue Jays system this year by a considerable margin. If it feels like we’ve been waiting a while for Barger, whom the Blue Jays talked out of a Florida commitment after taking him in the 6th round of the 2018 draft, it’s only because, well…it’s been a while. Toss in a year lost to Covid, and we’re now just starting to see what he’s capable of. The pop began to show up in Low A last year, and this year he became even more of an all-around threat at the plate, leading the system in OPS as he hit his way from Vanco ..read more

Blue Jays MiLB Pitcher of the Year: Ricky Tiedemann

Sportsnet (credit: Mark Steffens) To the surprise of absolutely no one, Ricky Tiedemann gets this corner of the internet’s nod as the Blue Jays Minor League Pitcher of the Year. There were a few candidates who deserve honourable mention (more below), but no Blue Jays pitcher dominated hitters at three levels like the 2021 3rd rounder did. With his upper 90s velo, low arm slot, and high spin rate, sweeping slider, Tiedemann’s 17% whiff rate led starters in the Blue Jays system by a considerable margin. Tiedemann fanned 117 hitters in 78.2 innings, and hitters at three levels managed only a palt ..read more

Big Nate Impresses in Rehab Outing

It was only one inning – against Low (sorry, Single) A hitters at that, but the Blue Jays have to be happy with Nate Pearson’s first appearance in two months. Pitching for the Florida State League’s Dunedin Blue Jays, Pearson began their contest against Tampa (the first of two, after rain shortened their game the previous day) with a tidy 10-pitch, 1-2-3 inning. A Florida source says the organization is thrilled with Pearson’s outing. The Blue Jays understandably would prefer to keep the buzz around Pearson to a minimum for now, but that performance gives him something to build on. Apparently ..read more

Second Time Around Better for Carter

Irv Carter, the Blue Jays 5th round pick last July has ben brought along slowly by the organization. Carter made his pro debut in the Complex League this season, and was plodding along with an 8.31 ERA in 7 outings totalling 13 IP, when he threw a pair of five inning, shutout starts to begin August. Not surprisingly, the farm department felt he was ready for a challenge with a promotion to the Florida State League. Baseball America tagged Carter as the system’s 22nd top prospect last month: Evaluators love Carter’s fierce and fiery mentality on the mound, earning the bulldog label from many. A ..read more

Robberse Has Decent AA Debut

MiLB.com RHP Sem Robberse had a reasonably good debut for New Hampshire tonight at Hartford’s wonderful Dunkin’ Donuts Park. If you take away a 3-run 2nd inning for the Yard Goats, highlighted by a bomb on a curveball Sem hung out over the plate, Robberse was pretty much in command for much of his 5 innings of work. Robberse needed only 8 pitches to get through the 1st, inducing a trio of groundouts. The 2nd was a different story. Robberse walked the lead off hitter, then gave up a single. Hartford LF Daniel Montano then smacked Robberse’s 2-1 pitch into Dunkin’s short RF porch. Daniel Monta ..read more

Today saw a flurry of moves made official in the middle to bottom tiers of the organization: RHP Sem Robberse – Vancouver to New Hampshire To be honest, I felt like this one was overdue, but given how Sem has pitched in June and July (4.76 ERA), I wasn’t so sure. Robberse spent time at the pitching lab over the all star break, and while he had a couple of bumpy outings after his return, he’s been solid in his two August starts, and the organization obviously thought it was time. Robberse uses a four-pitch mix to keep hitters off balance. His 47% GB rate was third in the Northwest League (wher ..read more

LHP Ricky Tiedemann showed no ill effects from a three week layoff in his first Eastern League start last night. Tiedemann, who last pitched in the Future Game, retired 7 of the first 9 hitters he faced – 5 via strikeout – in a pitch count monitored three inning stint. Tiedemann spent some of his downtime at the pitching lab in Dunedin, and it appears to have resulted in a Slider with more sweep to it: Tiedemann paint. pic.twitter.com/itWAcT5Qg8 — Future Blue Jays (@FutureBlueJays) August 6, 2022 Over his three innings of work, Tiedemann walked one and allowed only one hit. Blue Jays Top 10 Follow-Up: Who’s Close

Due to popular demand, here is one guy’s look at players who just missed the Top Ten list yesterday. Tomorrow, I’ll look at some players who have fallen out of my Top 10, but for now, let’s start with the players trending up. These are players with plenty of upside and remaining projection, but haven’t quite advanced high enough to get a real feel on their ceilings. 1. Nick Frasso, RHP Frasso came unbelievably close, and may still get there by season’s end. His 2022 campaign got off to a late start as he recovered from UCL Brace surgery. But the 2020 4th rounder has been electric, fanning just ..read more

CBS Sports photo There’s something about watching minor league games that I often find more interesting than the big league variety. Maybe it takes me back to my youth, watching my Midland, ON town team, led by a frizzy side burned 40-something former minor league pitcher named Gord Dyment while munching on crispy fresh fries we called “Johnny Fries,” after the local fast food legend who made them. Perhaps it’s the limited camera angles which actually lend a sort of charm to minor league broadcasts. The few cameras capturing the game are focussed on what’s taking place on the field, and not pl ..read more

Zulueta Scuffles in AA Debut

csplusbaseball.com photo His defence really didn’t help him, but Yosver Zulueta struggled in his Eastern League debut last night. The right hander, who is pitching at his third level this season (and may find himself in a big league bullpen later this summer), faced a challenge against the Red Sox’ Portland affiliate. A packed house of over 7 000 was on hand at Hadlock Field to see rehabbing Chris Sale, who mostly toyed with New Hampshire hitters in his four inning stint. Zulueta was squeezed a bit, but also had issues with his command in going to full counts with four of the first five hitter ..read more
