Photo by Mark Blinch/Getty Images It is Jackie Robinson Day in the MLB, celebrating the day Robinson became an MLB player and forever ended racism. Bassitt gets the start for the Jays. He is 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 3 starts. Luis Gil starts for the Yankees. He is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts. One of them was against the Jays. He went 4.1 innings, with 2 hits, 2 earned, 4 walks, and 8 strikeouts. Photo by Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images Over the past two weeks, the Blue Jays have been 6-6. Our batters hit .235/.317/.357, averaging 3.4 runs per game. Hot Justin Turner: Started 10 games. Hit .433/.526/.600 with 5 doubles, 7 walks, 5 strikeouts, 4 RBI and 1 caught stealing. He started a game at first and a game at third. There is little to complain about. He’s been terrific. I wasn’t thrilled with his signing, but he'll become a favourite if he continues like this. Cavan Biggio: Played 10 games, starting 9, .333/.394/.400, with 2 doubles, 1 walk and 9 strikeouts (and 2 hit by pitch). He starte ..read more

Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty Images It's not a surprise, but that Danny Jansen has been activated from the IL. Brian Serven is on his way to Buffalo. Please protect your hands Danny. It sounds like Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson will likely be activated tomorrow. Photo by Mike Carlson/MLB Photos via Getty Images Danny Jansen turns 29 today. When Danny gets onto the active roster, he’ll be in his seventh season with the Blue Jays. We thought he would be a bat-first catcher when he came up, but his glove was surprisingly good. Over the last couple of years, Danny’s been hitting with more power. In the last three years, he’s hit .237/.317/.487 with 43 home runs. Unfortunately, that’s in 228 games, as he’s had some injury time each season. He was hit by pitch ten times last year and had his throwing hand hit while behind the plate. It would be nice if he c ..read more

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports Yankees (12-4) vs Blue Jays (8-8) The Blue Jays welcome the Yankees into town, opening a three game series against the troublesome Yanks. It’s Jackie Robinson Day at the ballpark as all teams across MLB honour the life and legacy of the great Jackie Robinson. All of the players will be wearing number 42 on their backs tonight, so confusion will definitely happen at some point. But just know that you’re not alone. Tonight’s game starts at the standard weeknight home game start time, 7:07 ET. Blue Jays’ Starter Chris Bassitt will head to the mound for the four ..read more

Photo by Cole Burston/Getty Images Today, we have José Berríos (2-0, 1.45 in 3 starts) vs. lefty Kyle Freeland (0-2, 16.03). There isn’t much for news, but Jordan Romano is in Toronto, so I’m guessing he’ll be activated tomorrow or Tuesday. I’d think Swanson won’t be far behind. Daulton Varsho gets a day off against the lefty. The odds are that he’ll get into the game late, but I still see people on Twitter complaining. Can you imagine people complaining about Varsho getting a day off last year? I like Schneider on the left. Today's Lineups ROCKIES BLUE JAYS Charlie Blackmon - RF Georg ..read more

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports Rockies (4-11) vs Blue Jays (7-8) The Blue Jays wrap up their series with the Rockies, looking to win the series to run their series winning streak to two. Today’s game gets underway at 1:37 ET, a typical Sunday start time that I’m still trying to get used to. Blue Jays’ Starter Opening Day starter José Berríos makes his fourth start of the season today, and things have been going well for him so far. Through 18.2 innings he is 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA, although the underlying numbers don’t love his body of work nearly as much. He has struck out just 14 batters, roughl ..read more

Happy Birthday Gregg Zaun, Greg Myers

Photo by Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images Today is Gregg Zaun’s 53rd birthday. I have to separate Zaun, the player, from Zaun, the analyst, in my mind. I liked Zaun, the player, but I didn’t like Zaun, the analyst. The former was a pretty good catcher. He had some good seasons for the Blue Jays. The latter was a mess of old-school silliness and over-baked macho man stuff. There is a place for old-school voices, but I’d like them to be a little grounded and understand that the world has changed. Anyway, Zaun, the player: Zaun made it to the majors with the Orioles in 1995. The O’s traded him to th ..read more

Varsho Hits Grand Slam, Jays Beat Rockies

Photo by Cole Burston/Getty Images Rockies 3 Blue Jays 5 That was a fun game. It was decided on one swing of the bat, Daulton Varsho’s grand slam. But that wasn’t all of it. Yariel Rodríguez was terrific. 3.2 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. He was in control almost all the way through his 11 outs. There was a bit of trouble when he was tiring, but he was a ton of fun to watch. He had 2 strikeouts in the first inning and another in the second. And then one more in the third, even though he gave up a home run. He gave up a couple of singles in the fourth inning but still loo ..read more
