Caught in a Covid-19 Tornado

My coursework normally consists of wiring electronics or writing a computer program. It’s solving hundreds of physics problems or learning how to apply a new math theory. Coming to NYU Prague, I was met with a new type of work. Since I was taking my humanity courses, I was now asked to write a journal entry or read a dense literary book. I was asked to take pictures or tour the Prague castle and know its history. The shift in coursework was a major thing for me to adjust to. It was doing things that I wasn’t used to, and of course, it made me uncomfortable at times. After a few weeks, I had s ..read more

Hoping to Dream of Prague Again

I had so much more exploring to do. Yet I had done so much in my short time. I’m yearning for the exploring Ioring I set out to do in a continent easily made for just that. There is little to explore in the small continent of my childhood home where I’ve always lived as opposed to the historic, rich Czech Republic where I’m supposed to be finishing up my semester right now. Prague sometimes feels like an old wonderful recurring dream that I hope to dream of again each night before I fall asleep. The only proof I have that I was there are the photos I took or that were taken of me. However, t ..read more

Everyone told me that my semester abroad would be the most memorable semester of my college experience. I heard many stories from upperclassmen about the places they were able to visit and the memories they made. The added benefit of being able to be in a dorm with all the art majors exited me as well. I’d heard about the Osadni basement, about gigs other students before me had done, and I wanted to jump on that track. After the school organized an ice breaker open mic, I approached Karolina about making it a monthly event. In high school I had organized similar monthly open mics for my 4 yea ..read more

Chapter I Going Somewhere Closer to Home After being bombarded with emergency emails for a week, Renee and I finally got two tickets back to China with help from our lovely Yveta and Thea at NYU Prague. I ditched my business class flight so that I could have my close friend with me during this heart-breaking time of departure. My friends at the Czech Technology University, who I met during my internship, insisted that I visit the Petřín Lookout Tower. They showed me around the Prague Castle one last time. As we walked up the hill, I remembered the night when we went to a concert at Jazz Dock ..read more

Going Home

I just got home, and I wanted to let you know how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to study in Prague the last 6 weeks. The events that occurred in the past 48 hours were something that no one could have expected, and I am so thankful that NYU Prague handled the situation smoothly and quickly. All the RA’s, building managers, professors and administration are absolutely incredible, and I’m so lucky to have met and worked with them. Which makes leaving so much harder. I am so sad that I have to leave this amazing community in this beautiful city. For the first time, I was genuinely h ..read more

Why I Decided to Leave

On March 3, NYU sent an email to all study abroad students, giving them the freedom to choose to stay in their global site or continue their courses remotely, given the context of the rising COVID-19 epidemic. When I read the email, I immediately knew I would be returning home as soon as possible. To many, my decision seemed unnecessary as, at that point, there were less than 10 cases of Corona in all of the Czech Republic. Here are my reasons why… Hearing from my friends and classmates, they stay rest assured that if they were to catch the virus, they will remain in good health because they ..read more

(oat-milk latte with pastry of the day) For most NYU Prague students, being away from the Washington Square Campus means being away from the Blue Bottle at Aster Place: a cafe where you can comfortably relax on your own. In Prague, it’s difficult to find places to spend quality time alone due to the lack of on-campus study spaces. If you’re looking for places to study or to grab a solo drink, here’s a list of cafes that can satisfy your needs! SLOW Cafe The SLOW Cafe offers a variety of drinks including an amazing oat milk latte; for those that are lactose free, they can also substitute drink ..read more

When packing for your semester abroad, you might not have thought to include your video game console. Video games not only serve as a great way to blow off steam, but also create an alley to relive childhood nostalgia. If leaving your games at home created a void you’re yearning to fill, take a trip to Prague’s gaming museum, Cibien’s Corner. Cibien’s Corner has two floors with more than 100 gaming devices that you can play to your heart’s content. The bottom floor houses dozens of retro arcade and computer games where you could play the original Pac-Man game and Sonic the Hedgehog, as well a ..read more

A Letter to NYU Prague

August 24th, 2019. We each stepped foot in Prague, maybe for the first time, ready to call this new city home for the next four months. Our high expectations were matched by our high spirits. Orientation week- an amalgamation of sessions overviewing resources, history, and what was to come. We tripped on cobblestones, tried our first (and last) tredelnik, and undoubtedly struggled to buy groceries labeled in Czech. Our week without responsibilities ends, and classes begin. The struggle of three hour classes starts to take hold- we remind ourselves of the short pain we have to endure for five ..read more

Intern Intel: My Transitions Business Internship

When I went abroad, I knew that I wanted to gain some experience working at a local company. At the non-credit internship fair, I came to realize that there were not many internships overtly available for a business student like myself, but after speaking with the representatives there, decided to apply. I eventually landed an internship with Transitions, an online magazine whose mission is to provide free speech to post-Soviet bloc and other underrepresented countries. My role at the company was somewhat up to me to decide-they are a small company who can use development in many ways, so th ..read more
