Hello Cultured Kids! I daren’t even say it … can we look towards a more ‘normal’ summer? With so many vaccinated and a roadmap looking like we can move from social restrictions … The theatre trip we had booked in December has already been bounced twice, will it be third time lucky in June? European travel, with a third wave crashing seems somewhat out of the question, but we’ll be planning our holidays in this beautiful country, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll sneak a bit of European sun. Thank you for all the wonderful link ups last month. Myself Museum Mum and Zen Baby Travel chose our favourit ..read more

A walk from Blackfriars, London

As restrictions very slowly begin to lift, we can begin to travel outside our immediate locality. Whilst this doesn’t mean some of my favourite places in London are flinging their doors open just yet, it does mean that soaking up some of the things we love in London, we can go and see. I’ve devised a walk from Blackfriars which takes in a few wonderfully London sites. I am starting my journey at Blackfriars station, which in my view, has the best vista possibly any station has! First stop outside the station, is The Black Friar pub which is ‘wedged’  into a corner. The pub stands on the f ..read more

Sculpture in Battersea Park

There are many things we miss in lockdown, but for me, the closure of museums and art galleries is just heartbreaking. Online culture is fantastic, but nothing beats the real thing. Therefore, I’ve been seeking out culture in our local open spaces, and remembered the wonderful scuplture in Battersea Park. I’ve already written about the beautiful Peace Pagoda in Battersea, but now turning to the sculpture within the park. Barbara Hepworth Alongside the southern part of the lake, is a Barbara Hepworth work: A Single Form. Standing at over 10ft, this bronze work certainly catches the eye. The scu ..read more

Well, here we are aagin: Let’s not delve into how we got here, but we are. There is little cheer in these long, dark, cold nights, particularly when I can’t brighten them with a trip to the theatre, ballet or an art gallery. But yet again, I am turning to the online world and this time BBC4 is my cultural lifeline in lockdown 3. BBC4 is a channel designed to ‘make you think’, with ‘programming that is intellectually and culturally enriching’ according to the Freeview site. With that in mind, here are some of my picks. Please note that some programmes will be only on the iplayer for certain tim ..read more

Hello Cultured Kids! December is usually a month packed with back-to-back culture, but with the tier system in place, it’s looking very different this year. However, theatres, museums and galleries are adapting, and becoming cover-safe, so here’s hoping that Christmas culture isn’t totally off the list. Father Christmas is popping up at various venues, he’s taking all the right precautions and he’ll still be checking his list and delivering on Christmas Eve. Over to last month’s cultured kids, and the lovely Zen Baby Travel and Vyki at Museum Mum picked Chimp Trips visit to Puzzlewoo ..read more

The arts have taken a battering during covid, with many venues on the brink of collapse. Thousands who worked within the industry are facing redundancy and financial hardship. However, those theatres in tier two and one, can now reopen, and following guidelines, are covid-safe, and the show must go on! I’ve listed a few Christmas shows in London that are on – please check each theatre for their covid policies. We are booked to see Six at Lyric. Six is described by the Evening Standard as ‘the most uplifting piece of new British musical theatre’ as Henry VIII wives empower themselves as a pop b ..read more

Lockdown took many things away from us: One being the ability to soak up all the culture London has to offer. When the announcement came that, with conditions museums and galleries could reopen, you could hear the collective sigh of relief! Museums and art galleries have faced a very uncertain future since their closure back in March, so reopening is crucial to their survival. The Royal Museums of Greenwich phased the opening of the sites on July 20, with The Cutty Sark first, followed by The Royal Observatory. We were invited over to have a look at how they’d adapted for visitors in light of ..read more

The Peace Pagoda, Battersea Park

One huge advantage of lockdown has been rediscovering all the local gems in our local area, and having a dog who needs a daily walk, it’s been great to rediscover some of the beautiful parks in South London. A recent trip to Battersea Park, I rediscovered the beautiful Peace Pagoda, which has a rather enviable location with a view over the River Thames. The Pagoda was erected in 1985 as part of a series of pagodas around the world to spread worldwide peace and harmony, built by a religious organisation called Nipponzan Myohoj. The founder,The Most Venerable Nichidatsu Fujii met with ..read more

In these strange and curious times, we need culture more than ever: a form of escapism and a chance for our brains to absorb something other than the situation we are in. Even from our sofas and kitchen tables, we can use culture to expand our minds and thinking. Not only that, the arts scene is rapidly recording this era of our lives, with The Museum of London is collecting items so future generations can learn more about this period, and the V&A has a editorial project called Pandemic Objects. Pandemic Objects is an editorial project that compiles and reflects on objects that have taken ..read more
