The New York Mets looked to try and capitalize on their shutout win from the night before but couldn’t get over the hump as they dropped Sunday’s contest in Miami against the Marlins, 4-2. Christian Scott took the mound for the Mets and, despite a strong start, had moments of trouble that put the team at a disadvantage. In the bottom of the third, Scott loaded the bases with one out but managed to escape the jam by retiring Jesus Sanchez and Otto Lopez. Christian Scott. Luis Severino entered Saturday’s start with an opportunity to get back on track. His previous three starts were not so good. Specifically, 1-1 with a 6.05 ERA in 19 1/3 innings. It was also a chance to push the New York Mets back in the win column, who had lost two games in a row. Severino was magnificent throughout, dominating the Miami Marlins’ lineup from start to finish. Early on, neither team could find a way to execute with a runner in scoring position. The Mets got on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI fielder’s choice from Francisco Alvarez. Luis Severino faced a make-or-break moment in the sixth. He walked Otto Lopez on four pitches to put runners at first and second with two outs in the sixth. The Mets led 1-0. He had thrown 86 pitches. Carlos Mendoza came to the mound. Decision time. José Buttó was warming. Mendoza let Severino pitch to Nick Gordon and he fell behind 2-0, burying the second ball in the dirt for a wild pitch that moved the runners to second and third.
