Larry Lucchino, the former president of the Red Sox (2002-15), died on Tuesday at age 78. Lucchino, who once said he hoped his legacy would be that he “made a difference in the cities he lived in,” certainly lived up the claim. Across baseball tributes flowed in for the hard-charging baseball executive. Embed from Getty Images So significant, it can be hard to put Lucchino’s contributions to this century’s Red Sox in perspective, let alone capture his achievements for other storied franchises like the Orioles and Padres. His obiturary in the Boston Globe captures a lot of the details, but co ..read more

Red Sox Split Opening Series

The Red Sox opened the 2024 regular season with a 10-game, west coast road trip starting with four games at the Seattle Mariners. After a win on Opening Day, they lost the next two games, but managed an Easter Sunday victory for a series split. Boston starting pitching was the highlight of the opening series. On Thursday, Brayan Bello allowed two earned runs over 5.0 inning with two strikeouts. Nick Pivetta followed on Friday with just one run allowed over 6.0 IP (and with 10 SO). Kutter Crawford‘s Saturday start was excellent, too, with one unearned run over 6.0 IP and seven strikeouts. And o ..read more

Winter Weekend Returns to Springfield

The Red Sox annual fan fest, Winter Weekend, will return to MGM Springfield (and the next door location, the MassMutual Center) on January 19-20, 2024. If you haven’t been to a Winter Weekend it’s a fun experience. When I lived in New England I would make the pilgrimage each season, being sure to get there in time for a Town Hall hosted by Tom Caron on Friday night. For me, this event was the highlight of the weekend. Typically, principal owner John Henry is on hand for the Town Hall, taking a few questions, as well as Sox Manager Alex Cora, and CEO Sam Kennedy. It was at last year’s Town Hall ..read more

Tim Wakefield, 1966-2023

On the last day of the Red Sox season, just minutes before game time, came word of Red Sox Hall of Famer Tim Wakefield‘s death. If you’re a Red Sox fan there is little chance you didn’t know of Tim or his accomplishments. And hopefully, as tributes flowed in following the news, you also know what a man he was off the field. “It’s one thing to be an outstanding athlete, it’s another to be an extraordinary human being. Tim was both,” said Red Sox chairman Tom Werner. “He was a role model on and off the field, giving endlessly to the Red Sox Foundation and being a force for good for everyone he e ..read more

Last, Once Again

In 2022, the Red Sox finished with 78 wins, in last place in the American League East. And in 2023, they did no better, finishing the regular season in last with the same number of wins. Things are different this time, though. The Sox dismissed baseball boss Chaim Bloom in September and are on the hunt for a new head of baseball operations. On Monday, a day after the regular season ended, CEO/President Sam Kennedy said the process to replace Bloom was underway but refused to put a timetable on when a new leader will be in place. “We’re not going to let any deadline or timeline put constraints ..read more

Red Sox Fire Chaim Bloom

As the Red Sox season will in a couple weeks, the Chaim Bloom era came to sudden stop on Thursday. Bloom, 30, was the club’s chief baseball officer since October 2019. The weather at Fenway Park this week matched the team’s dreary performance in 2023, as Boston played New York in back-to-back doubleheaders on Tuesday and Thursday after rainouts on Monday and Wednesday. The Sox and the Yanks are in a dead-heat, hoping to avoid finishing last in the American League East. But the 2023 results were not the only reason for Bloom’s departure. Though Boston is 267-262 (.505) over Bloom’s tenure and a ..read more

Red Sox pick 22 in 2023 MLB Draft

As the curtains closed the 2023 edition of the MLB draft, a sense of both hope and apprehension hung in the air. Over the course of 20 grueling rounds, a staggering 614 young athletes were chosen, their dreams seemingly intertwined with the fate of their potential new teams. No longer just a mundane conference call, this year’s draft was a fan event, one enveloped in both anticipation and nervous energy. And so, as the dust settled and the crowds dispersed, a lingering question remains: which among these chosen few will triumph and which will falter? Only time will tell, as these aspiring ath ..read more

With Tuesday ‘s 10-4 win over the Twins, the Red Sox have now averaged eight runs per game in their last seven. It’s a positive turnaround after Boston had struggled over their previous ten games, averaging just 2.5 runs/game. Tuesday’s outcome marked the third straight game in which Boston has scored at least nine runs against Minnesota, a streak dating back to April 20. It’s the first such streak for the Sox against the Twins since July 3-5, 2000. The only Major League team with more such games are the Mariners, who put together a four game streak with 9+ runs against Minnesota in 1998-99. I ..read more

Duran’s Three Doubles

The Red Sox extended their winning streak to five games with a win on Monday at Minnesota. You can read about that everywhere. But the standout for RSNStats was the performance of Jarren Duran, who connected for three doubles in three consecutive at-bats. Duran is the only Major League player with three doubles in multiple games this season (also April 28 against Cleveland), and the first to do that in the American League since Reese McGuire connected for three doubles in two games of 2021 with Toronto. In Red Sox history, there aren’t many who have had three doubles in multiple games of a sea ..read more

Wong blasts moonshots in win over Blue Jays

On any given day, you really don’t know what you’ll see in a ballgame. On Tuesday, you wouldn’t likely have expected to witness the kind of offensive exhibition Connor Wong put on. But there it was, a 4-for-4 night with two home runs and a double that were difference-makers in Boston’s 7-6 win over the Blue Jays. Wong doesn’t look like either a prototypical catcher or slugger. But he’s been impressive behind the plate, nailing six potential base stealers, the fourth-most in the Majors. And his bat has shown signs of pop, despite a .241 AVG entering Tuesday’s action. Wong’s first at-bat of th ..read more
