The Cubs open a three-game series at Fenway Park.
Friday notes...
AFTER THAT BAD START... Since losing their first two games of the season at Texas, the Cubs have suffered back-to-back losses only once more, and that was to different opponents, in different cities: at San Diego, then at Seattle. Meanwhile, the Cubs have had a five-game winning streak and two streaks of three straight. The Cubs are 16-7 since their 0-2 start. They were 16-7 last year in nine overlapping spans between July 7 and Aug. 16. They were 17-6 in two overlapping spans, July 18-Aug. 11 ..read more

The Cubs make their first visit to Fenway Park in seven years.
The last time the Cubs played in Fenway Park, 2013 Red Sox World Series hero Koji Uehara was on the Cubs, and former Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel was a member of the Red Sox.
The Cubs lost that game 6-2, and there isn’t a single player who played that evening who’s still on the team he played for back on April 30, 2017, unless you count Kyle Hendricks on the Cubs’ injured list.
A lot can change in seven years, that’s for sure. The teams have met at Wrigley Field each of the last two seasons, with the ..read more

The Cubs sweep the Astros to close a successful homestand.
Every season is an entity onto its own. You watch enough seasons and they start to feel like one long homogenous mass. But when you sort them out, or more specifically when one is going on, you can really feel that individuality. And so, as we sit in front of this currently unfolding season, this feels like an odd one.
I think that a majority of Cubs fans probably thought that this team could take another step forward. That might move them closer to 90 wins and with some good fortune, maybe that wou ..read more

South Bend shuts out Quad Cities. That’s the end of the good news.
Outfielder Bradlee Beesley was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Iowa.
The Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Nico Zeglin and assigned him to Low-A Myrtle Beach. Zeglin had been pitching out of the Mexican League and had pitched collegiately for Gonzaga and Long Beach State.

Pete Crow-Armstrong won the game with his first MLB hit.
The first thing I thought when I saw Pete Crow-Armstrong’s sixth-inning blast head toward the right-field bleachers was, “You have got to be kidding me!” PCA had struggled so mightily in his first exposure to MLB pitching last September, and Justin Verlander had just made him look silly in his first two MLB at-bats this year.
And then he launches a two-run homer — into the teeth of a strong wind blowing in — for his first major-league hit, and it wound up winning the game for the Cubs, 3-1, giving the ..read more

The Cubs go for the series sweep.
Thursday notes...
AS DIFFERENT AS NIGHT AND DAY: Last night’s game was the Cubs’ 898th under the lights at Wrigley Field since they were turned on for the first time, on Aug. 8, 1988. This afternoon’s game will be their 1,905th in daylight at Wrigley since then — and a win would be their 1,000th in those games. Their daytime winning percentage is .525. At night, they are .533, with 479 wins and 419 losses. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
