The 99 Club in London has begun welcoming applications for its female and non-binary comedians bursary. This programme is open to all female and non-binary artists who are taking their first full length solo comedy show to the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival – a major step in a comedian’s career.
Five shortlisted comedians will appear in a showcase at one of their West End venues in June, where their performances will be judged by a panel of top industry professionals. Two comics will each receive an award of £500, with the other three finalists receiving a £100 award.

I first met Val Troy in our online writing group ‘Writers Ink’ in 2021, bonding over a piece of comedy about a character awkwardly removing troublesome structural underwear in a bathroom toilet at a wedding. We’ve all been there. We quickly discovered we had similar senses of humour (one with slightly fewer filters than the other). This sparked the idea that we two Dublin comedy writers should collaborate together.
Months later we met in person over several glasses of Prosecco and exchanged numbers. That’s when the WhatsApp diatribe began in earnest. In fact, I think some of our best work is o ..read more

Sex is funny, sex is exciting, sex is a ride.
Sex is also a place where we are most vulnerable – there are not many other places or people we find ourselves naked with.
As a hijabi, I’m often always thought about with my clothes on. It’s been very rare to feel like sex can be a thing for me to celebrate. Despite this, I know it’s silly to think of myself removed from this – so I discovered – when I first wrote an article on the subject entitled “Horny Muslim women like me aren’t supposed to exist during Ramadan” for the Metro.
It proved a very popular article going viral and being republished ..read more

Natasha Hodgson and Zoe Roberts from SpitLip chat to Katerina Partolina Schwartz about working on their musical Operation Mincemeat and the process to get them all the way to the West End.
How does it feel to have a show on the West End?
Zoe Roberts: I feel like it hasn’t really sunk in yet.
Natasha Hodgson: We’re so focused on trying to finish the show – that has been our focus for 5 years, just trying to make the show good. Actually, when you sit back and think about it, it’s a life dream come true for us, it’s an amazing feeling.
ZR: It sort of feels like nearing the top of Everest, but we ..read more

Creator of the smash hit podcast All Killa No Filla with Kiri Pritchard Mclean, Rachel Fairburn (twitter here) talks to us about her new show Showgirl touring the UK from September 2023, as well as her female comic inspirations, how she didn’t discover that she was a blunt person until doing comedy, and how her mum is the funniest person she knows.
Tell us about your new show
It’s called Showgirl, and I’m writing it at the moment. There won’t be any drama in it, any revelations or sad bits, anything that’s trendy in comedy. Basically, I just want to write a really funny show. I’m being a bit m ..read more

Taking yourself too seriously has never been a good look. I’m not suggesting that you put on your ‘clown shoes’ when you go to work or out with your friends, but there’s many advantages to being comfortable around using humour.
