It’s wedding season, but I haven’t been to a wedding in a long time. I fall into that age category where we are (not impatiently, I hasten to add) waiting for the next generation to tie the knot. But I have very fond memories of the 2-5 years when you couldn’t move for nuptials as both me and my peer group moved into the next chapters of our lives.  But I do love a wedding and if you are lucky enough to have one (or two) on your social calendar this year, here’s some outfit inspiration that will have you covered for the wedding season. A lot of thought and planning goes into what to wear ..read more

Time To Dress Up

This time last year, I described the fashion landscape as being a tale of two halves; on the one side we were clutching on to our loungewear, and on the other, we were yearning to get dolled up again. The festive theme was gentle. But with lockdown almost a distant memory, this festive season is all high-impact glitz and glam! Whilst the future isn’t necessarily bright (at least for the short-term) there’s a certain YOLO attitude in the air. And often in the face of austerity, the fashion world’s response is to bring out the showstoppers. Metallics, sequins, luxe fabrics and feathers are abou ..read more

So what’s new for AW22?

…not a lot really!!! Well of course, there’s lot of fabulous new clothing in store, but in terms of new trends for the coming season, much of it is familiar. There’s many a throwback from 70s, 80s, 90s and now the noughties have been rehashed for the present time. Proving that fashion is indeed cyclical.  On trend once again are statement collars, blouson sleeves, pussy bows and cut-outs from the 70s. There’s 80s power-dressing with oversized tailoring, cocktail dresses and chunky costume jewellery. From the 90s we have halter-neck tops, bias-cut slip skirts and leather blazers. And now t ..read more

Spring Prints

Spring is always a bright season in terms of fashion. As in nature, we welcome the injection of fresh, vibrant colours to lift out spirits after the dark winter months. This coming season is no exception – for obvious reasons, it’s going to be a colourful Spring/Summer like no other! But in addition to the rainbow-block brights; bold, unapologetic prints are also on the agenda. For SS22, designers used playful prints to create an escape from reality, bouncing from futuristic styles to classic throwbacks. The fashion runways were awash with colourful patterns which signalled a return to joyful ..read more

Colour Me Happy

Clothes are transformative and I think you know by now that I am a firm believer in dopamine dressing – the idea that wearing specific clothing and colour can lift your mood and set free those happy hormones.  Fashion has always been a way to express who you are and it’s now scientifically proven that the clothes we choose to wear have the power to impact how we think, feel, behave and interact with others. Without getting too technical, it’s called ‘enclothed cognition’ and once and for all, finally attaches psychological meaning and impact to how we dress. Never underestimate the power ..read more

People have very different ideas about what a Christmas Day outfit should look like. I have a friend who stays in her PJs all day… Personally, I have a hard time, comprehending this! I mean, if you don’t get dressed-up on Christmas Day, when do you get dressed up??? If your tree is decorated in twinkly lights, the presents are neatly wrapped with metallic bows, and your table is dressed in festive adornments – why would you not want to get similarly sparkly??? I am a firm believer in dopamine dressing, so wearing an outfit that adds an extra spark of joy and makes us feel our most fabulous at ..read more

How to wear brown

Brown is the new beige Not since the 70s has brown had such as significant presence as now. Previously considered dull and unsophisticated, brown has returned from fashion exile to be adorned head-to-toe by every fashionista from the cool streets of Denmark to the Kardashians & co in LA. According to global trend forecaster WGSN, brown was the fastest-growing colour in womenswear in AW19/20  The progression from beige to brown is completely logical as the trend for favouring earthy, neutral tones shows no signs of slacking. Brown is a soothing shade that throughout history has been s ..read more

A capsule wardrobe: how to achieve the sartorial Holy Grail
Club Forty - Fashion, Food, Fun & Life in your Forties

The capsule wardrobe has come to epitomise ‘perfection’ in terms of a closet of clothes. But why? There are several reasons for this search for the so-called sartorial Holy Grail – a capsule wardrobe made up of a specific number of clothing items that mix and match seamlessly; making getting dressed every day a dream. Fashion is so accessible and affordable that as a result our wardrobes have become confused and chaotic. But most of us have come to realise that we don’t need all the clothes we have and we are naturally pairing down our wardrobes. Plus the shift in consciousness towards ethica ..read more

A Shacket Story

I first wrote a post on Shackets back in 2017 when the word was a relative newcomer in fashion vernacular. Fast-forward 3 years and the hybrid shirt-jacket is not only part of everyday fashion speak, it’s one the most popular trends of the season. And no wonder. In 2020 the appetite for clothes that are both practical and stylish has never been higher. A shacket looks like an oversized shirt, but provides the warmth and layering options of a jacket. It’s a multi-purpose piece that provides the versatility that we all demand from our clothing these days. As we move into Winter, the transitiona ..read more
