Pentastar Cylinder Misfire Saga: $4000 bill...

(August 2021) I'll try to keep it short but this is 18 months of headache... Ever since March 2020 I've had consistent P0302, P0304, P0306 engine lights. (driver side misfires)  I took it in to the dealer and the driver side head was replaced. Got it back... and light comes on again.... so head replaced again. This makes the THIRD time for me. (Later I got prior repair history and the head was replaced in 2014 as well!) Lucky for me they replaced it under the 150,000 mi warranty for the 2012 driver side head (they know there is an inherent problem with the 2012 driver side head) So the ob ..read more

Pentastar 3.6L PUG Lower Intake Manifold - Larger intake runners = More Power? Jeep Wrangler

Short version: You can upgrade the lower Intake Manifold on the JK 3.6L Pentastar with the later "PUG" (Pentastar Upgrade) version first seen in the 2016 Grand Cherokee.  This was a direct drop in replacement for my 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The revised lower intake runners have a slightly greater air volume than stock. This theoretically improves the pumping efficiency of an engine as it flows air. It's an easy swap for those that already know how to remove upper intake manifold and are mechanically inclined and have a 10mm, 8mm socket and T30 star bit. Here is a closer look to compare the ..read more

Yet another Check Engine Light. I was just about to load the family up for a week vacation to Grand Canyon when the CEL came on.  Again... Didn't want to chance anything so with no time to fix it I packed the sedan with luggage and 5 people for the 6 hour drive! Jeep trips are less fun without the Jeep... The '12 housing and the offending sensor on the right. I ran the code and it was P0520 Oil Pressure Sensor. It is attached to the back of the Oil Filter and Oil Cooler Housing. Well that's just great. The housing is located under the top and bottom intake manifold in the vall ..read more

Popping noise in JKU dash! - A/C blend door actuator failure and replacement

I suddenly had a loud popping noise coming from the center ash area of my '12 Wrangler. It was intermittent and I couldn't figure out what triggered it. It was definitely a gear skipping noise, very loud and would be about 10 pops in a row and then stop. Randomly it would happen again and then wouldn't happen for long periods of time.   After a few searches I learned it was most likely the A/C Heater blend door actuator unit going bad. It is located in the center dash and has a stepper motor that changes the blend door position. I have a Sahara with automatic A/C so whenever the com ..read more

Jeep Wrangler 3.6L Pentastar P0300 P0302 P0304 P0306 - The Final Verdict

With a 2012 Wrangler passing 101,000 miles on the original left side cylinder head I have been a bit nervous. The 2012 left side head is a known problem from the factory and it WILL FAIL. It's not a matter of IF but WHEN. So bad in fact that they extended the warranty to 150K miles on all 3.6L Pentastar heads. Thanks Chrysler, but next time don't make bad parts.... I checked the code on the head and it was the original. Having it work is nice and all but what if I rack enough miles that the warranty extension isn't in effect when it pops? Finally the CEL went on and off for a few months w ..read more

$2 DIY - Removal of Wrangler JK Hood Bumpers

I won't be laying down the windshield anytime soon, especially with how hard Jeep made it to fold down. Since I will never use them I decided to remove the big hood bumpers. Is it critical? Not a chance. Is it going to make a difference? Nope, just looks different. Why do it? Dunno, why not? Any benefit? When I wash it I don't need to wash around them. It'll look different and is cheap... and I was at the hardware store already. If you want to do it or want to just try it out DO NOT go online and pay some stupid amount like $10 for special made, official Jeep aftermarket, vehicle specific ..read more

Wrangler JK Front Seat Leather upholstery install - with side airbags

Jeep Wrangler 2012 leather front seat, with side SRS airbag. Removal and replacement of upholstery Quick and dirty guide. *If you can't figure out how to remove the seat or take it apart... do not proceed with this job yourself... It take a good bit of effort and time and basic mechanical ability, and problem solving, to redo the upholstery. **I mainly posted photos for those who may be wondering about upgrading leather with SRS Airbag versions of the front seats. Non-airbag versions are a little easier and they just roll on and attach like stock. The airbag seatbacks have a stiff panel ..read more

The factory leather on my 2012 Wrangler Altitude edition was, to put it simply... bad, for several reasons. 1. The factory decided that "leather upholstery" only referred to a few small panels on the seat and backrest being real leather. The rest is vinyl. Before you say this is normal, refer to the photo showing that leather only refers to 2/3 of the seat surface your body contacts, the rest is vinyl. 2. The special edition status shows "Black leather with red stitching". I thought perhaps my stitching had faded or gotten very dirty over time, looking muted and not very noticeable. 3.6 Pentastar P0152, P113e OBD2 check engine light - diy fix

The check engine light came on but I didn't notice serious driving issues. This usually means the O2 sensor or "oxygen sensor" has an issue. From the Torque AppĀ I used my cheap bluetooth OBD2 reader to check out the codes and came up with: P0152 : Bank 2 Sensor 1 O2 sensor High voltage P113e : Bank 2 Sensor 1 O2 sensor slow response (high frequency) The Jeep Wrangler 3.6 Pentastar has four Oxygen sensors, two on each side of the V6, one each in the manifold before the catalytic converter and one each after the cat. Note: Bank 1 is on the Passenger side and Bank 2 is on the Driver side of the ..read more

Budget Stereo Upgrade, how the Infinity factory upgrade should sound

I purchased a 2012 Altitude model which came with several factory "upgrades", the Infinity 7 speaker system with the 730 navigation headunit being one of them. As time goes on, every Chrysler factory upgrade has proven to be underwhealming. The Infinity sounded about as good as any base model paper whizzer cone car system I've heard. Sure, it had tweeters and a sub but neither seemed to do anything. Flat music response and just loud enough to hear over the open top wind noise but muddier. I'd previously done the tweeter mod for cheap that woke up the separate tweeters in the front and that c ..read more
