If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there… right?

I was listening to some old CDs the other evening and one of the songs on George Harrison’s disc caught my attention. “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there”. Like most of his work, there are profound messages contained within his songs. This one in particular made me think about myself and some recent client interactions. Most of the clients I meet today are either on their SAP S/4HANA journey, have road mapped it out or are planning for it. The majority of those conversations are focused on which migration path is being taken (Brown, Blue or Greenfield), what the ..read more

Making Engineering to Order child’s play

As a child I played with Lego. I would spend hours crossed legged on the carpet, tongue hanging out following the instructions to build the latest spaceship that my parents had bought me for my birthday. Some of the creations took minutes, some hours but once complete I could escape into another universe. Building a Lego spaceship however is literally child’s play compared to the complex engineering to order processes of our customers. They face several challenges, including frequent and ongoing design changes not only before production starts but during the process. From tracking of the purch ..read more

How do traditional bosses become tech leaders?
Fujitsu UK & Ireland Blog
by Sanjeev Kamboj

In 2018, The Wall Street Journal published a piece titled, “Every Company Is Now A Tech Company”. It highlighted the scope of transformation occurring within industry and suggested that established businesses need to consider hiring a ‘technical co-founder’. However, just four years on and even this advice feels conservative. The global pandemic poured fuel on the already raging pace of digital transformation, leading more businesses to adopt cloud, remote working and ever more innovative solutions to simply survive. We’re now in an accelerated technological landscape that’s new territory for ..read more

Businesses are in a bind. On one hand, every leader knows they need to digitally transform their organisation. The marketplace is changing at rapid speed and the furnace powering it is innovation. As the world becomes more complex and the future more uncertain, technology is filling the gap and presenting paths to success for enterprises of all sizes. However, to digitally transform, you need digital skills, and as every business leader is painfully aware of, digital skills are a scarce resource these days. Some 72% of leaders believe their technology skills gap has increased over the past 12 ..read more

What to do when digital transformation becomes counter-intuitive

When it comes to understanding the enterprise environment IT leaders currently contend with, it would be fair to say they are caught in the centre of a perfect mega-storm. And I say mega-storm because it’s actually several storms converging – and they’re leaving a drastically altered IT landscape in their wake. The first disruption has been driven by the significant uptake in hyperscaler platform providers, with juggernauts such as Microsoft, AWS and VMware all providing enterprises with a rich eco-system towards this new cloud-based world. While businesses are embracing modernisation with 91 ..read more

Prestigious science journal Nature: Fujitsu’s Digital Annealer #1 for NP-hard Problem Solving

The journal Nature, considered perhaps the most prestigious in science, last month ranked Fujitsu’s Digital Annealer (FDA) first for NP-hard problem solving when compared with market rivals. Benchmarked against a library of real-world problems, the FDA’s first-placed ranking was achieved despite researchers using a version of the FDA four years behind the current version, one 99.2% less capable than todays.   Furthermore, this early variant of FDA was still second overall, best for medium and large classes, and medium and large density problems, comparable on all experiments and perf ..read more

Building Trust and creating resilience through digitisation

I occasionally drop in and listen to BBC’s long-running Desert Island Discs radio programme. Its archive is an 80-year-old treasure trove of fascinating personal stories interspersed by the guest’s favourite songs. It regularly strikes me that while the interviews are recorded at a moment in time, it’s fascinating how much of what is discussed is timeless. I was recently listening back to an interview with Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, from July 2020. He was describing the approach NATO takes to preparing for future crises. He described how the focus of the organisation is n ..read more

Cool to Zero

The world has changed. As a teenager buying trainers the key thing on my mind was ‘would I look cool?’ As I got older my priorities changed and I became concerned more with the technical capabilities of the trainers. Did they have good cushioning? Were they lightweight? Roll forward a few more years and there is a new consideration in my purchases. What is the impact on the environment? 25 billion pairs of shoes are produced each year with a large proportion of those being trainers. They are leaving more than just muddy footprints when it comes to their environmental impact with a typical pair ..read more

Navigating to Digital Manufacturing Cloud

For those of us of a certain age, the business of navigating our way around our countries whilst driving a vehicle used to be an uphill challenge. I vividly remember relatives discussing the merits of the M5 over the A303 in the UK to get to London and would rattle off road names and numbers as if they were ordering from a local takeaway. I also remember the need to buy a road Atlas every few years to get the latest information and more importantly because the old one had become torn and was falling apart. For those interested in road safety and the use of mobiles, it was a regular activity of ..read more
