Photographing Flowers with the XF80mmF2.8

Flowers! Everyone loves flowers. They give me great pleasure and I photograph them year-round. In the cold New England winters, I buy flowers at the market to brighten the drab days and just use the window light. My dining room is painted red, and I have two windows facing west and one that faces south, so the lighting is ever-changing and often inspiring. My camera and 80mm macro lens live on the side table in the dining room, along with the tripod and reflectors. All the images in this article are shot hand-held on the Fujinon XF80mmF2.8 macro lens. Many of the images are cropped to 4×3, whi ..read more

A Tale of Two Cameras
FUJILOVE

Back in mid-May of this year, Fujifilm released two new cameras and lenses at the X Summit in Sydney: the X-T50 plus XF16-50mmF2.8-4.8 R LM WR and the GFX100S II plus GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR. I was very fortunate to have been invited to test out all the new gear a few days ahead of the announcement at a press event held by Fujifilm UK at Port Lympne, an incredible hotel, safari park and wild animal reserve boasting sweeping views of Romney Marsh and the Kent coast. I felt a mixture of excitement to be combining both my love of photography and animals, and apprehension in the face of using some ..read more

Are Kaizen Firmware Updates Back?
FUJILOVE
by FujiLove

Remember the good old days when Fujifilm would give us firmware updates on older cameras just because? Well, I wouldn’t say it was for no reason. However, it was a nice bonus for those of us who had older cameras but would receive a significant feature upgrade a few years after its release. The best example I remember was when Fujifilm engineers figured out a way to give the X-Pro2 4K video after saying it would be impossible to do so. It was firmware version 4.0 and it was a huge firmware upgrade for those who invested in the X-Pro2 vs the X-T2. Even though it was 4K internal (no HDMI output ..read more

A First Look at the GFX 100S II

When I got the chance to take an advanced look at the newly released GFX100S II, I didn’t have to think twice. Taking travel portraits is my speciality, so I decided to bring the camera to the north of Vietnam. I packed three of my favourite lenses: my trusty GF20-35mmF4 for environmental portraiture and the occasional landscape, the lightweight, versatile and sharp GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6, and the essential GF110mmF2 for anyone serious about portrait photography on the GFX system. A little background I started working with the GFX system about eight years ago, after travelling to Varanasi, India wi ..read more

‘Dubai Creek: Old & New’ With the GFX 100S II
FUJILOVE

Even after having been in Dubai for 22 years now, Dubai Creek is still one of my favourite places for street and travel photography. For generations it has been the lifeblood for locals and the favoured site for early settlers at the start of the 19th Century – the place where the city’s pearl industry once thrived. When I was asked by Fujifilm to test the brand-new GFX 100S II in early 2024, shooting a project centred around Dubai Creek was my first choice. Today, Dubai Creek is still pulsating with history, culture and commerce, something first-time visitors to the city often miss. In the ol ..read more

Fujifilm Announces the INSTAX WIDE 400 and Mini LiPlay Refresh

FUJIFILM INSTAX has launched the new instax WIDE 400 instant camera, the successor to the instax WIDE 300™, launched 10 years ago in 2014. This analogue instant camera, in the ever-popular WIDE format, shoots double the width of the instax mini film. Ideal for group shots and landscapes, it allows the photographer to capture the atmosphere by including the world around the subject. The new self-timer feature enhances group shots, ensuring no one is left behind the camera. The camera angle adjustment accessory also allows users to shoot from the perfect angle, without the need for a t ..read more

One Camera to Rule Them All: A Battle of Versatility Between the X100V & X-T5
FUJILOVE

This month I decided to conduct an experiment, using either the X-T5 and XF16-55mmF2.8 or the X100V and its excellent fixed 23mmF2 lens to find out what is king when it comes to versatility: size or zoom. We as photographers tend to throw the word ‘versatile’ around a little too often and its meaning changes vastly with context. So, I did a little experiment this past month to figure out what it really means in a standard, everyday sense. (Sure, the concept of ‘everyday’ for a travel documentary photographer probably differs to many of you but is the perfect test bed for something like this ..read more

Is the New Fujifilm X-T50 Worth It?
FUJILOVE

I can’t believe we are already discussing another X Summit but here we are once again. This is Fujifilm’s second X Summit of 2024 and I am certain there will be at least one more before the end of the year. To be fair, the first X Summit was all about the X100VI, so it made sense that we would have a mid-year announcement for ‘mid-excitement’ product launches. I’m not trying to be negative. Not every new camera or lens launch has to be epic. The upgraded X Series kit lens is interesting, the new medium format camera is a decent ‘parts-bin’ upgrade and the X-T50 is an experimental camera that m ..read more

The Hidden Benefits of Fujifilm’s Black and White Film Simulations

In the early days of mirrorless cameras with electronic viewfinders (EVFs), I was somewhat of a sceptic. I’d been working with SLRs and DSLRs for the longest time and loved the big, bright view of the world that matched what my eyes saw. I was used to working that way and had become very good at predicting the results my cameras would deliver upon pressing the shutter button. Early EVFs were simply no match for that way of working. They were low resolution, high latency and lacked the clarity that the rear screens on the same cameras had. Over time, though, EVF technology has improved and they ..read more
