American fans of the Mitsubishi Chariot family enjoyed a gratifying range of badging choices for their vehicles during the middle 1990s, with the shortened three-door version available here with Mitsubishi, Dodge, Plymouth and Eagle badging ..read more

The very first front-wheel-drive Mitsubishi production car was the Mirage subcompact, which first hit Japanese streets in 1978. We were introduced to this car when it appeared in North America as a 1979 model with Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ badging, replacing the rear-wheel-drive Colts that had been sold here since 1972. Mirage-based Colts were available in the United States all the way through 1994, but that wasn't the end for that generation of Mirage on our streets. Here's a Mirage from the first year of the post-Colt era, found ..read more

Chrysler did very well selling Mitsubishi Forte pickups with Plymouth and Dodge badging in the United States, even after Mitsubishi began moving the same trucks out of their own American dealerships in 1982. The 1987 Ram 50 2WD short bed weighed in at just over 2,500 pounds, so it was reasonably perky with its 2.0-liter G63B four-banger making 90 horsepower… but there's no replacement for displacement! At some point along the line, a Chrysler small-block V8 engine found its way into the engine compartment of this truck, now resi ..read more

Mitsubishi first began selling Cordias, Tredias, Starions and Trucks in the United States for the 1983 model year, and an Americanized version of the Pajero SUV followed a year later. This was the Montero, and sales of the first-generation version continued here through 1991. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of the very first Monteros to reach our shores, found with some customizing touches in a Northern California car graveyard recently.
That October 1983 build date and VIN ending in 00258 tells us that this truck may well have been part ..read more

There's an updated Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV on the way for the 2025 model year, four years after the launch of the fourth-gen. Europe released a bit of information on their version in July, one "specifically developed for the European market." Despite hype that the electrified SUV "is based on the Japanese I-Fu-Do-Do concept of authenticity and majesty," the outline we can make out in the European teaser image suggests exterior lines won't stray far afield. Now Japan has released a few artfully shaded images of what buyers can expect ..read more

While we get new and updated car models every year, its inevitable that we'll need to say goodbye to some nameplates as well. This time around, it feels like we have confirmation or reports of an unusually large number of vehicles being discontinued in 2024 and the coming years.
We shouldn't be surprised. A large number of automakers are approaching their various target dates for electrification of their fleets. As such, some beloved internal combustion cars are going away, sometimes with appropriate fanfare like special editions. Others are slinking away quietly, killed by slowing sale ..read more

Mitsubishi Motors North America Unveils Momentum 2030 Business Plan. Photo courtesy of MMNA.
Various reports might help with filling in some of the blanks in Mitsubishi's Momentum 2030 plan. That's the automaker's new initiative we heard about last month that Mitsubishi North America President and CEO Mark Chaffin said is "setting the stage for new powertrains and vehicles being introduced, new dealerships being opened, and new technologies being developed to make the shopping and ownership experience faster, easier and more enjoyable." The first hints of new product suggested a rugged plug-in ..read more

The Mitsubishi Galant first appeared on American streets as the 1971 Dodge Colt and then a bit later with Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Sapporo badges. Mitsubishi Motors finally began selling Galants from its own U.S. showrooms for the 1985 model year, and Galant sales continued here through four more generations before getting the axe in 2012. We saw some interesting and/or quick Galants along the way, including the Sigma, VR-4, GS-X and Ralliart; today's Junkyard Gem is a rare example of the sporty eighth-generation Galant GTZ sedan ..read more

If you haven't been paying attention, you may be surprised to hear that Mitsubishi has been doing fairly well in the United States over the last several years. Once a mid-major (to borrow a college athletics term) program here in the States, the automaker's stagnating lineup and lack of vehicles with clear desirability — once you got past the hardcore Lancer Evolution series, at least — led to declining sales figures through the 2000s. The brand's more recent resurgence, led by the latest Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander ..read more
