Fun fact: the first time I tried roller derby, I got my mouthguard stuck in my mouth. To this day, I have absolutely no idea how it happened – it must have been too small or something – but I remember driving home looking like I had exceptionally white teeth. I first entertained the idea of roller derby about a year ago while I was living in Maine. A few years ago, my kids wanted to go roller-skating. I hadn’t been on skates since I was in high school, which was over 20 years ago, but I remembered how fun it was and thought we would have a nice afternoon. As soon as I got back onto the rink, I was hooked all over again. I started out as a fan of roller derby. Then finally opportunity presented itself for me to have the time to take on the sport and I ran with it. NOVA Roller Derby is excited to announce that as of March 20th, we have been accepted as full members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA)! NOVA was accepted in the WFTDA’s Apprentice program in April 2016, although our journey to full membership started in 2015 with the first full year of having a bouting WFTDA team.
