A dowagers hump occurs when there is an increase in the kyphosis of the upper thoracic spine. To put it simply, a bump that some people may have where the neck joins the upper back (sometimes referred to, rather unkindly, as a hunchback).
There is no such thing as bad posture, just variations in posture
Although it may look unattractive and even be uncomfortable, it’s unlikely to be caused by anything terrible. Like many things, it’s often just a sign that the body is run down. This can be because of lack of movement, poor diet and general body deconditioning. It may even be caused by poor men ..read more

Every day at the clinic we see new patients with back pain related to their work. We see carers, builders, teachers, chefs and office workers alike. No profession seems safe! In fact, I’ve come to the conclusion that working is just dangerous for everybody! Not every occupation can be dangerous, though, right? So, why do so many people blame their pain on their work?
In truth, there are hazards of some form or another associated with most occupations and activities. However, if we approach these hazards with knowledge and anticipation, we can be prepared, which will help to prevent the ..read more

We have recently introduced Packages as a replacement offer for our old loyalty card reward system. We have done this as a way to help us to cut down on waste and also, in these pandemic times, a way to reduce contact points. We are also slowly phasing out our concession system in favour of packages – we are still treating anyone under the age of 21 for £25 per treatment but all others who currently benefit from our very generous concessions will be encouraged to move to packages in order to benefit from more affordable care. This will make the system more fair for everyone.

If you own an iPhone you have probably noticed the little app with a white background and a heart? It is labeled “Health” and over the years it has updated and evolved to track and store all sorts of information relating to your health and wellbeing. This little piece of technology can keep track of your weight, BMI, blood pressure, pulse (if you have a watch to go with it), your sleeping habits and your mensural cycle (if you have one). However, of more interest to your chiropractor, this app will also keep track of a lot of information that relates to your musculoskeletal health.

It’s been a long dark winter, when the sun has come out the shadows are long and its too cold to bare any skin anyway. What does this mean from a chiropractic point of view?
Did you know that by the end of winter 87% of people have below optimal levels of vitamin D in their systems? Unfortunately in those who are over weight and/or over 50 years of age and those with darker skin tones that figure goes up to 100%.
Vitamin D deficiency results in persistent pain and dysfunction, stiffness in the morning, low mood or depression, behavioural problems, reduced immune function and fatigue.

There is a wealth of evidence pointing to the fact that being happy and having a positive outlook will help you to live a healthier life. Happy people choose healthier food, exercise more frequently and sleep better. A positive outlook also improves the immune system, helps to combat stress and even helps to keep the heart healthy.
Happiness also helps to combat pain- One study of over 1,000 people with painful arthritis of the knee found that happier individuals walked an extra 711 steps each day — 8.5% more than their less happy counterparts.
Here are some tips from the experts to help you ..read more

Why?
Research shows that staying stationary – whether sitting or standing – for long periods of time, can be bad for your health. Our bodies are built to move and doing so for at least three minutes every hour helps us feel our best. Once you start moving, you’ll notice:

We’ve all heard our parents say “Don’t crack your knuckles, it’s bad for you”, but is it? This popping, crunching or cracking noise is called joint cavitation and it often happens when there is a rapid change of pressure within a joint space. It is extremely common for our joints to crack, especially as we grow older, so typically it’s not something to worry about.
Joint cracking is very common
As we age, our joints tend to make more crunching noises because our cartilage wears down making the surface rougher when these rub against each other. The way you sleep, walk, move, and do daily activi ..read more

Balance is yet another one of those functions that we take for granted. We know that, somehow, our brain and body will work in unison to keep us upright and steady. Until it doesn’t.
Research shows that, globally, falls are the second biggest cause of accidental death after traffic accidents. In the last three decades the total amount of deadly falls around the world doubled. You may be forgiven for thinking that this may be due to an ageing population. However it is estimated that incidents of falls are increasing at a rate that outstrips our baby boomer population. One study showed that fata ..read more

Ever experienced a random fleeting pain in your back or shoulder? Perhaps you have felt a weird muscle twitchy thing in your upper arm or eyelid? These little zings and zaps are usually not and indicator of damage, rather they’re a reassuring reminder that your nervous system is running the required background maintenance programs.
Sometimes, if you have injured or irritated a nerve, when you move around and particularly when you are stressed or tired, you may get some more of these zings or zaps. You might cause a zing on some movements but not on others and not always on the same movement ..read more
