ArcGIS Dashboards are a staple when it comes to the Esri toolbox. Over the years, the user interface has been developed and there is a continually growing set of capabilities. Their purpose remains the same: to help users make decisions, visualise trends, monitor status in real time, and inform their communities. But how can one app do all that? This blog digs into what ArcGIS Dashboards has to offer, its key capabilities and how they are being used to support core aspects of organisation workflows.
Why use ArcGIS Dashboards? Informative

The landscape of charitable causes is a broad one. Think of the big or small charity organisations that strive to make the world a better place by supporting causes such as: animals, arts and culture, community development, education, environmental, health, human and international relief. There are over 180,000 charities in England and Wales alone and whilst causes vary, the core of the mission is largely the same; to understand a situation, to act, to measure and monitor your impact and communicate your work to the public and/or various stakeholders, grant funders and donors.
So, whether it’s ..read more

Kenneth Field wrote a compelling blog where he explored how different cartographic approaches to data can skew the output in ArcGIS Pro. But this blog made me wonder, how does ArcGIS Online measure up in comparison? Can the same, or even other techniques, be undertaken in Pro’s online counterpart?
To explore the cartographic tools in ArcGIS Online, I am taking the 2021 Census data for England and Wales that was recently published in Living Atlas and am focusing on the data at the Lower Tier Local Authority (LTLA) level. The data is initially presented in Map Viewer as a standard choropleth map ..read more

You’ve spent the past few hours creating a map in ArcGIS Online. It’s fine. It does the job, but you know that there’s room for improvement. If only your organisation’s branding scheme could be integrated into the map. Or, if you could quickly convey meaningful information to your viewers when they interact with data points. With a bit more customisation flexibility, you know your map’s presentation would be infinitely improved.
Arcade is your answer – a lightweight scripting tool built for the ArcGIS system to elevate your map quickly and effectively. Before writing this blog I’d never heard ..read more

Data collection is easier than ever thanks to technology which allows users to carry out operations both in office or out and about. But how can organisations ensure their workers safety and maximise efficiency? Enter, location sharing. If this is your first-time hearing about location sharing, this blog offers an overview into what location sharing is and where it’s used within the ArcGIS system.
For users already familiar with location sharing, the second portion of this blog may be more up your alley. We’ll look at recent changes to licensing, and specifically how these updates ..read more

While I was creating my Electric Vehicle charge maps, I realised that I had developed a workflow in ArcGIS Pro that could be repeated for any highway in Britain. A colleague suggested that I try recording and sharing my workflow in Tasks. I hadn’t come across Tasks before, but I was willing to give it a shot.
At first glance, Tasks looked unassuming – just a small pane in the ArcGIS Pro programme. And it seemed a little too straightforward – I wasn’t sure that this software wizard could handle my entire workflow. But after exploring the many capabilities of Tasks, I can attest that it’s a dece ..read more

Back in 2021, many of us in England and Wales may remember filling in the many pages of the census. Since then, much of the data has been processed by the Office for National Statistics and is starting to become available to the public. As you might expect, this data has a spatial element and we’ve been working hard to make as much of the data as possible available in Living Atlas and National Data Service. Read on for more information about this exciting data:
So what’s in this release?
In this article we’ll be looking at the first results from phase 1 of the census data, which include ..read more

Many of you will have made the switch from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro already, but you may still need to move ArcMap content to the new ArcGIS Pro projects. So – what needs to happen if you want to start working with cartographic representations (existing or new) in ArcGIS Pro?
Let us see how representations were managed and used in ArcMap, and how this has changed in ArcGIS Pro.
Line features symbolised with a dashed stroke representation (left) and with stroke weight and colour overridden to emphasise different trail types.
Properties of representations in ArcMap
In ArcMap, representation ..read more

In the UK, the 10 hottest years on record have all been since 2002 and in the summer of 2022, July and August were the warmest ever. Despite periods of rainfall, hosepipe bans were put in place across large areas of the country.
As a result of these events, I wanted to investigate whether extreme weather is becoming more frequent in the UK, and which regions are experiencing the biggest change. Throughout this mapping process, I encountered many obstacles so I am going to take you through the journey on how I ended up with the final maps.
The Data
