Great Britain missed out on a medal at the Women’s World Championship Division I Group B tournament in Riga after a 3-2 defeat by Latvia on the final day. GB and Latvia went into the game tied on seven points, each looking to eclipse Italy (nine points) and take a silver medal. Slovakia had earlier secured gold with four wins from their five games. Great Britain secured their first win over Slovenia in almost a decade, today’s 2-1 win in Riga setting up a medal opportunity on Saturday’s final day. GB dominated the first period with a remarkable 30 shots on goal but Slovenia’s Pia Dukaric – who plays for Yale University in the top NCAA division – was equal to everything. Great Britain have named their team for the Under-16 Women’s Evolve Cup in the Netherlands next month. The tournament – which runs from 2nd to 4th May – will see GB face a number of European clubs including teams from Sweden and Czechia. Great Britain went down to a 7-1 defeat at the hands of top seeded Slovakia in Riga today but gave their opponents plenty of food for thought as Mike Clancy’s squad continue to find their feet back in Division 1 Group B. Nicole Jackson made a third straight start in net for GB who iced an unchanged lineup after yesterday’s recovery day. Great Britain suffered late heartache in Riga as Poland came from behind to win 3-2 after overtime in the Women’s World Championship Division 1 Group B. Building on Sunday’s opening win over Italy, GB were 2-0 ahead at the end of the first period against last year’s silver medalists. Great Britain opened their World Championship campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Italy this lunchtime in Riga. After a scoreless opening period, GB netted their opener on 37.55 when Jodie Alderson-Smoth slotted the puck past Martina Fedel in the Italy goal. The assists went to Kathryn Marsden and Laura Horwood. Great Britain have named a 26-man roster for training camp ahead of the World Championship in Czechia. The 22 players who helped GB win February’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Cardiff have been rewarded with a place in the squad, alongside Ollie Betteridge and Josh Tetlow who return after injury. Great Britain Under-16 Women have named their long-list roster as they prepare for an international tournament later this year.
