Scotland west coast, View by Arisaig beach.  From a brief holiday in May, during most of which views were obscured by mist.   Towards St Andrews, Fife coastal path in November.   The first day that it didn’t rain in a long while. Was my birthday, so that was my treat. A relief to get out painting.   Hello, and I hope this finds you well. Delayed to the point of almost never happening, I’m glad to have at last compiled a new blog post.  Lots of painting trips throughout the year have come and gone, and with the end of Autumn we’ve had quite a long period of ..read more

St Monans and the old kirk in the evening light.  I’ve waited for months to get to this spot, in this direction of light, with a high tide.  The final piece of the puzzle also fell into place, being a fairly interesting sky giving me some inspiration to work with on that front too.  This scene is so exacting; a lot of drawing to get right with issues of perspective literally ‘from all angles’ – in not only the buildings but the waves, bank and clouds.  There are bits of the tidal walls in this that might look as if I’ve NOT got the perspective right, but that’s just the st ..read more

Painting Competition – All the entries and result! Thank you to all who entered my most recent painting challenge/competition. It sounds like you all enjoyed it which is the main thing and I hope you also found the exercise useful. Below are all the (sixteen) entries I received, in no particular order (if I’ve somehow managed to miss one, please inform me immediately!!)  I’ve written a short ‘positive critique’ under each one.  I’ve also included one slightly more ‘critical’ comment, being whichever strikes me the most.  People generally tell me they want this in order to improv ..read more

Crail from Roome Bay, Christmas eve. Studio painting following a walk that morning.   A bit late for Happy new year.  But here we are again! A slightly shorter post this time, but plenty to show here and some news.  Time flies and is definitely never ‘spare’.  I’ve done some paintings and some tuition and breathed some fresh air. For me, getting past the winter solstice is always a good moment. Opportunities to paint outdoors will be getting a bit more frequent now.  Painting outside in winter (in Scotland) leaves just a few decent hours of daylight, and that’s if it ..read more

Welcome to my blog/newsletter. It has been too long since my last posting.  Sometimes life can be overwhelming.  There can be so much one feels about everything in the world, and to open one’s mouth seems insubstantial or completely irrelevant.  My whole life has felt irrelevant much of the time.  I’ve been feeling I could do with a few years away from it.  I hope you’ve been faring as well as can be hoped.  Looking back over the summer I see that I have at least painted some pictures which I’m happy with, as well as those other ones.  I’ve had a nice time te ..read more

Hi and I hope this finds you well. I’ve had a busy couple of months, though less with painting-related things than I would have liked.  Time constantly taken too much with obstacles related to a new home/old house (/new life!) and I can see this might be ongoing indefinitely.  Life changes, and more than ever it seems a matter of keeping up just to stand still.  Perhaps it’s the same for you at the moment (can anyone get a plumber or electrician, or is that just my problem??)  Anyway, I know I’m very fortunate still to be earning my living through teaching and selling the o ..read more

View of the River Parret and Somerset levels from Burrow mump. (Commission) Hi all Hope you’re well, warm and have time for a few pics to scroll through. This is going to be a fast run-down, with fewer words than normal. This first painting was a commission for a lady who provided a lot of help to the farmers of the area depicted, during the 2014 flooding.  I think it was a retirement present, so I hope she likes it. The Castle rock and Isle of May, nr Crail, plein air.   At the end   The dark cloud as it was This was during the afternoon.  I’d gone in the morning t ..read more

Dear friends,  Hello!  I hope this long-delayed blog may come as a welcome distraction, from more important things.  It has been months (again) since I last blogged, so there’s quite a lot here.  I hope you are well, or ‘bearing up’ under life’s pressures, anxieties and the practical difficulties of the times.  I think it helps to remember that we are not alone with these issues.  In this blog I have paintings to show, of the new landscape in my life, and some upcoming ventures to mention.  And I share an article on the topic of Colour (ever popular subj ..read more

Hi and I hope this finds you well! It has been quite a while since my last post, for a number of reasons. I have long been in the delightful process/throes of selling/moving house, and this is still ongoing. We’ve now moved out, but have yet to move in again.  I am heading northward though, with a destination fully planned, but until it ‘happens’ experience has taught me not to dare mention its name! Anyway, I have quite a few pictures to show you.  Below are the best from any painting outings I’ve managed over the last few months.  First are my most recent, during a camping tri ..read more
