Exhibition submission season

It’s exhibition submission season for me – always an exciting time, mixed with elation when my paintings are chosen (and of course a little disappointment when not.) Either way, both experiences feel a useful way to help spur me on in my creative journey. Pictured here is “Woodland light / enchanted woodland” a new painting and recent submission of mine in watercolours on board. Entering open exhibitions and competitions is a great way to discover ‘your tribe’, whether that’s with a society that celebrates your favourite medium or a subject orientated call out. This can lead to invites to ex ..read more

January watercolours in a Wiltshire bookshop!
Catherine Beale – everything watercolour

This week I was delighted to be invited to Marlborough’s stunning White Horse Bookshop in Wiltshire to demonstrate to a class how to capture light lake reflections in watercolour. Our day was all about using luminous, dripping paint to create trees reflecting on a calm water surface. My “gravity painting” techniques got into full swing as we worked swiftly to merge pigments and create wild watermarks – painting the colourful trees and their reflections simultaneously. We noticed that the slightly bumpy surface of the paper guided the paint around to create organic edges and subtly mottled pain ..read more

Sparkling light on the sea @ Cornwall School of Art

Last week we enjoyed some gorgeous seascapes full of bright light – a joyful subject to teach during my two days of workshops for Cornwall School of Art, Truro. My watercolour pictured here is based on a photo from Cot Valley near St Just. I remembered the valley walk while I was painting. It leads to a magical beach covered with giant egg-shaped boulders, perfectly rounded and multicoloured. My wet-in-wet techniques helped me to blend sea and sand where the water pours through the rocks creating sparkling channels ..read more

Tilt your painting surface, let loose with running colour and embrace differential drying – not for the faint hearted! Now booking for Wednesday 21 February 2024. Meanwhile bookings are coming in for my January Cotswold retreat at Packhorse Bath close to my studio. Enjoy a package of painting exercises over two days to advance your watercolours, plus pub supper and lunch. A ..read more
