From the archives. I did my animation degree (1995-8) just as computers were starting to take over from paper and cel, and this project illustrates that pretty well. Basically a motion graphics job (with some character animation) for Newcastle's Discovery Museum, the bried was to tke the existing logo for their LiveWires educational installation and create a few animated loops. I didn't have the computer skills so I drew it all on paper, plus a lot of literal cutting and pasting, then scanned the drawings and finished them in Photoshop. (This video is made from more recent photos of the origin ..read more

https://vimeo.com/818677528 Recently I realised my showreel badly need updating, so here it is. This includes work for Johnson's, PricewaterhouseCooper (with the red background), Irn Bru and Fensa. The last two clips, showing the recycling process of plastic bottles into clothes, and a map of my native Northumberland, are demonstration projects showing my own approach to the 'whiteboard' technique: combining the basic technique of timelapse illustration with a more painterly style and added animation to create a broader variety of results ..read more

How Plastic Bottles Are Recycled Into Clothes

https://vimeo.com/796935000 Whiteboard style animation is a great tool for communicating complex messages or narratives in an easitly comprehesible and engaging way. One thing I'm trying to do with the medium is to present it in different visual styles that are perhaps not normally associated this this appraoch, or that other creators aren't using. Another is to incorporate more actual animation - as opposed to time-lapse artwork - into the films. Often, whiteboard animation is simply time-lapse illustration... which is fine, because it makes it a very cost-effective way to create short films ..read more

A quick guide to production

https://vimeo.com/790045644 Whiteboard animation is a great way to communicate ideas or processes. I used to make these the traditional way, drawing on a large sheet of paper under an overhead camera, but this is a cumbersome process and very hard on the back! Also the end product is very hard to make alterations to. It's infinitely preferable to do it digitally, sitting at a comfortable desk, where changes can be made far more easily. Also, this method makes is simple to combine the time-lapse artwork with animation (show here with a few simple loops) which helps bring the whole thing to life ..read more

A few years ago I found that one of my old paperbacks had been nibbled by bookworm. Flipping through it revealed an interesting time-lapse pattern of the damage, which I turned into a GIF ..read more

Brunton Cottages - animated walk

https://vimeo.com/450017958 I was delighted to be commissioned by Brunton Cottages to create two short films illustrating walks in the local areas which visitors to their properties can take. Since they're right next to our village as well, my partner Trina and myself often take these same walks, so I was able to add a lot of personal touches of things I'd observed on the routes. I'm hoping to use this technique a lot in the future, perhaps illustrating longer walks all over the world, driving or cycling routes, cruises, etc ..read more

https://vimeo.com/477966860 We're pretty spoilt around here for pleasant spots to take out lockdown exercise - actually we just go for walks much the same as we do in normal times. We've lived here for over four years but are still discovering new routes within two or three miles of here. This is one of our favourites. Our friend Andy Craig did the music. It was done before the film, so very much provided the inspiration for the visual style of this one ..read more

The project was never realised, unfortunately, but it was an interesting exercise to take images of famous paintings and give them depth and movement - a technique often used in TV documentaries with old photographs. These examples are early tests where I was learning the technique, so a little rough round the edges, but interesting to look back on. More recently I've had a few jobs ..read more
