A quick guide to production

https://vimeo.com/790045644 Whiteboard animation is a great way to communicate ideas or processes. I used to make these the traditional way, drawing on a large sheet of paper under an overhead camera, but this is a cumbersome process and very hard on the back! Also the end product is very hard to make alterations to. It's infinitely preferable to do it digitally, sitting at a comfortable desk, where changes can be made far more easily. Also, this method makes is simple to combine the time-lapse artwork with animation (show here with a few simple loops) which helps bring the whole thing to life ..read more

A few years ago I found that one of my old paperbacks had been nibbled by bookworm. Flipping through it revealed an interesting time-lapse pattern of the damage, which I turned into a GIF ..read more

Brunton Cottages - animated walk

https://vimeo.com/450017958 I was delighted to be commissioned by Brunton Cottages to create two short films illustrating walks in the local areas which visitors to their properties can take. Since they're right next to our village as well, my partner Trina and myself often take these same walks, so I was able to add a lot of personal touches of things I'd observed on the routes. I'm hoping to use this technique a lot in the future, perhaps illustrating longer walks all over the world, driving or cycling routes, cruises, etc ..read more

A Walk Near Newton-by-the-Sea

https://vimeo.com/477966860 We're pretty spoilt around here for pleasant spots to take out lockdown exercise - actually we just go for walks much the same as we do in normal times. We've lived here for over four years but are still discovering new routes within two or three miles of here. This is one of our favourites. Our friend Andy Craig did the music. It was done before the film, so very much provided the inspiration for the visual style of this one ..read more

The project was never realised, unfortunately, but it was an interesting exercise to take images of famous paintings and give them depth and movement - a technique often used in TV documentaries with old photographs. These examples are early tests where I was learning the technique, so a little rough round the edges, but interesting to look back on. More recently I've had a few jobs ..read more

Having found a large stick and a bridge, I thought I'd have a bit of fun, so we shot bit of video and I played with it in TVPaint and After Effects when I got home ..read more

Northumberland Coast Path

https://vimeo.com/432323040 Following on from my last couple of whiteboard-style animations of local walks, I thought I'd try one that covered a few landmarks that would be familiar to a few more people than my immediate neighbours. The Northumberland Coast path actually stretches from Cresswell in the South to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the North, but just for brevity I've kept this film the stretch closest to home, from Warkworth to Bamburgh. Because this is a particularly cost-effective approach to animation, without losing the appear of a hand-drawn technique, it's a great way to present an ove ..read more

https://vimeo.com/427372249 We've been very lucky during the lockdown to live in an area where we can go out for walks without having to worry too much about social distancing. In normal times, it's unusual to meet anyone when we're out walking, and over the last couple of months it's only been slightly busier, with most people in the village off work. A few months ago I started recording our walks in little illustrations in my diary. They've grown more complex over time and last week I had the idea of turning one of them into a whiteboard film ..read more
