Great Britain’s Charlotte Bankes has moved one step closer to retaining her Snowboardcross World Cup crystal globe with her sixth successive win in the first of two competitions being staged at Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec, Canada. The premiere on the one kilometre long and challenging course was a huge success with a blue sky on Saturday, with Bankes’ win also the 15th of her career. Snow depths at ski resorts famed for their late-season April skiing have had a big boost from heavy snowfall over the last week. The snow, heaviest in France and the western Alps, was heaviest above about 2,500m altitude with a number of resorts seeing more than a metre pile on to their higher slopes. Low altitude runs though saw little change. After several months with little snowfall it’s good news for those heading to the slopes in late  March, April or even early May, so long as they book a ski area with access to high altitude terrain. It is snowing again in the Alps following the huge snowfalls in France, as well as some ski areas in western and northern Austria, Italy and Switzerland at the weekend. The snowfall today (Tuesday 14th March 2023) is more widespread than the weekend falls, with many areas further east in Italy and Switzerland as well as in Austria posting good falls down to the valley floor.
