The snowy end to April in the Alps shows no sign of abating with a number of resorts posting up to a metre of snowfall in the last three days. The latest big falls come after Gstaad’s Glacier 3000 ski areas reported a 1.5m (five foot) accumulation in a similar period last week. At the start of this week it’s Austria’s Stubai Glacier (pictured top earlier this week) in Tirol region, which has had over a metre of snowfall and is now posting Europe’s deepest snow up high at 5.65 metres (nearly 19 feet), one of the deepest snowpacks reported all season.  It’s staying open to late May. Its only a week or so since Sun Peaks ended their 23-24 season, but the resort reports that Doppelmayr teams and lift parts have already arrived ahead of construction of the Canadian ski centre’s latest high-speed chairlift. The new West Bowl Express will go into service next winter, increasing capacity on the route, part-served between 1992 and 2021 by a T Bar lift, from 600 to 2,000 people per hour and opening up new terrain. A new survey of 1,000 skiers and snowboarders has found that they’ll accept higher ski holiday prices averaging up to 11% if it means their trip will have a lower environmental impact. The survey was conducted by Cenusiwde on behalf of the UK’s longest-established ski holiday company, Erna Low, and polled 1,000 “nationally representative people aged 16 and over who said they ski and/or snowboard”. Zermatt has announced it will offer more summer skiing options for all this year, opening up terrain previously reserved for national team training. The famous Swiss resort, which offers skiing year round on Europe’s highest lift-served slopes, has also said it will switch its focus to helping young ski racers improve with enhanced summer training facilities. In the second year of fundraising for Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK), a charity whose mission is to open snowsports to all, skiers and boarders booking their holidays through Igluski.com have donated almost ten times the sum raised in the previous, inaugural year of the partnership.
