Why do I have to relocate?

I accepted a job at IBM. I currently live in the SF Bay Area. Don't need to pay rent or buy groceries because I live with my parents in my childhood home. There are quite a few IBM offices in the Bay Area (San Francisco, San Jose, San Ramon, etc.) and I would be perfectly fine working from them. However, the company wants me to move to the Midwest (Chicago) or the East Coast (New York City) for this role. I'll have to pay rent, buy and cook my own food (no more hot meals made by my mom), and navigate life in a new city all on my own. I will be saving a lot less as opposed to the Bay Area. Gender discrimination

Recently rejected to manage the team I have been with for 5+ years. Instead, a new manager has been found from outside our group. Given the highly specialized nature of our work, it baffles me as to why any Director would do this. What’s a little suspicious is that the hiring Director only has female managers under her. I am wondering if there is a case for gender discrimination? This is IBM India. submitted by /u/Narattiwas [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is it weird to give upper management blue points?

There is a VP that controls an industry alignment that always hooks me up. What I mean by that, trusts, allows me to work, will help if needed, if I request call will always meet, will call me to ask my opinion, etc. I normally use blue points for colleagues, either my level or below. Thoughts? submitted by /u/Nathan-Island [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Required to move for a fully remote position

Hey all, I’m a recent college grad and will be joining as an associate consultant soon in IBM’s federal division. Part of the requirements for the job was having to move to/close to DC. I already know which project I’m going to be placed on and from talking to others, I know that this project is pretty much all remote. I am pretty excited at the prospect of moving but it just doesn’t make sense if i’ll be remote the entire time. I’d rather stay at home and live rent free. Any reason why they’d be making me move for a fully remote project? submitted by /u/SweetPermission4906 [visit reddit] [c ..read more

Jury Duty Protocol

I had jury duty this week and let my manager know last week. Since I'm new-ish to IBM (officially came over in Jan and this being my first time serving on a jury), does IBM want proof of jury duty? Asked my manager this same question 4 days ago who said he'd look into this but has yet to get back to me. Went through HR and got that generic IBM statement of jury duty, which isn't helpful. The courthouse I went to gave me docs that I can use for proof but does IBM want proof of jury duty days or can I just say I had jury duty for x amount of days? submitted by /u/kitkatnat21 [visit reddit] [co ..read more

Changing posted salaries on job postings?

I applied to the SWE apprenticeship program a few days ago and with 100% certainty the posted salary range was ~$94,000-$105,000. However after a few days I looked at the job description again and the salary changed to $77,000-$85,000 https://careers.ibm.com/job/20332339/software-engineer-apprentice-austin-tx/?codes=WEB_SEARCH_NA Is this a common thing they do? Post a job to get buckets of applications and then later change the salary? It's giving red flags to me. Even though I'd still love the opportunity, a change that drastic in salary isn't something small. Also it's unclear where the pos ..read more

OK Arvind, we get it - you don't have to use healthcare shenanigans to get rid of US employees.

IBMer, US based, been here ~8 years. I'm one of those "invisible handicapped," people - while you can see when someone's legs don't work or quickly pick up that someone's deaf, you'd be hard pressed to learn that my immune system basically yeeted itself (and tried to take me with it). Thankfully there are meds I can take to keep on going, supporting myself, several family members, etc. Very expensive meds, as one month supply costs ~$2,500, but with health insurance and using payer assistance programs from the drugs' manufacturer, that usually costs me maximum $10/month. Or it did, anyway. Af ..read more
