A commission painting of animals on a farm

I got a call from two local farmers who wanted to commission a painting of several their favourite animals. As a city person I know absolutely nothing about farms, in fact I find some farm animals a bit intimidating. Especially the larger cows. And most of the smaller ones. I was chased by cows when I first arrived in Somerset and have never quite got over the experience. Nevertheless, I was still looking forward to having a guided tour around a proper working farm. After a quick introduction we took a wonder around the sheds and fields. Accompanying us were two manic border Collies which ran ..read more

A video featuring a small drawing for a large painting in Maida Vale

For this one I visited West London, getting-off at Warwick Avenue – probably one of London’s quietest tube stations – to specifically draw the community of Little Venice next to the Regents Canal. Two communities in Maida Vale by the Regents Canal Really, when I say ‘community’, I mean two communities. The first, known as Little Venice, is on the Regents Canal, mainly consisting of houseboats and converted barges, evoking a curious piece of rural England ploughing through the metropolis. Although some cater to tourists, most of the boats and barges are fully residential and don’t go very ..read more

A painting of man looking out towards Albert Bridge in London

I concept for this painting came from a walk through London on a bleak January morning. It was one of those mornings which was intensely cold with that very thin yellow light that just seems to make things feel colder still. Part of the walk took in Battersea Bridge. I had a mind to draw the house boats which huddle together on the North bank of the Thames in Chelsea. I arrived early as I wanted to catch the house boats with their lights still on. As it turned out I needn’t have ventured out early, today would never be fully light. I crossed the bridge from the Battersea side and made my way a ..read more

A Small Drawing and Video of Clevedon Pier in Somerset

It is January. It’s freezing cold. It’s by the sea , but I’ve decided to go out and do a small drawing of Clevedon Pier in Somerset. And a video to go with it.        It was once described by John Benjamin as the most beautiful peer in England and I think John Betjeman had a point, even on a day like this. It was opened in 1869 as a tourist attraction and you could also get a paddle steamer to Wales from the end. Everything was fine until 1970 when two of spars collapsed, and it took a huge fundraiser, to get it back to what it looks like today. Anyway, back to the drawing ..read more

The Barbican Estate and Centre, in the City of London

The Barbican This painting is available as a limited edition print Everyone has an opinion on these grade II listed blocks of flats and the associated Barbican Centre. I don’t know anyone who is indifferent to it. Its either loved or hated. This complex was built in the 1970’s in the British Brutalist style. It was first conceived after World War II when this part of the City of London suffered catastrophic damage during The Blitz. The initial plans were floated about in 1951 and it was finally built between 1965 and 1976. Unlike many other Brutalist buildings in the UK this was not built for ..read more

A painting of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London

Someone contacted me earlier this year asking me to paint a scene along the river Thames in London. It is arguably one of the most famous river views in the world. This being the view from the south bank of the Thames looking across to the Tower of London and featuring the iconic Tower Bridge. I arrived on-site at about 3pm and there were plenty of tourists about, indulging in selfies or lounging about on the marble benches provided by the counci, taking in the view . I don’t mind tourist areas although it can be tricky to concentrate on working up ideas as the curious often gather and as ..read more
