It's our money. "Incentives" (tax holidays for corporations) are a source of corruption everywhere.  Southern states are particularly notorious for bribing businesses to locate in their borders. But as Jimmy Durante once said, "everyone's getting into the act.'   See criminal indictments in N.J. doling out "incentives" as part of a criminal enterprise. Here in St. Johns County, there's no County Ethics ordinance, no Ethics s Commission, no reports of any background investigations of "incentive" seekers, no and meaningful disclosure of beneficial ownership of corporate "incentive" app ..read more

What role have our local candidates played in this flummery?  From Tampa Bay Times/Orlando Sentinel:  OPINION | Guest Column Scott Maxwell Yup, Florida school board bans a book about banning books My plea today to my fellow Floridians during an election year: Stop electing idiots. Specifically, stop electing them to school boards. The school board in Indian River County voted 3-2 to ban a book called "Ban This Book." The book, by author Alan Gratz, was written for 8-to-12-year-olds and encouraged them to challenge authority. The Moms for Liberty-backed board members in India ..read more

Fried's official portrait taken in 2019 Good news. So, no more marked districts in Florida?   Wonderful. My late friend and mentor, Larry Tucker, told me circa 2008 that Florida's misguided Democratic and Republican leaders agreed with each other on "marked districts" -- legislative districts where they would not compete.  Thank you, Florida Democratic Chair Nikki Fried (Nicole Heather Fried) for ending this pernicious practice., which kept good local candidates from state funding for decades!  From Florida Politics; Here’s how — and why — Florida Democrats found candidate ..read more

It was called a "third-rate burglary" by the President's sixth-rate press secretary, RONALD LOUIS ZIEGLER. On this day in 1972, the Republican National Committee's team of five crackpot burglars were caught in tbe Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate.   In 1973, on a college interview trip to Washington, D.C., my mom and I stopped to peer though this window on the sixth floor of 2600 Virginia Avenue., N.W.  The DNC had departed but the stencils were still on the window. When I spoke out at our St. Johns County Commission after January 6, 2021, I called DONALD JOHN TRUMP a fascist.  Commisson Chair JEREMIAH RAY BLOCKER responded to First Amendment protected activity by "Democrats" by sua sponte changing Commission meeting format, removing public comment from the top of the agenda, making We, the People wait.  From Chillicothe Ohio Gazette: Burgess column: Stop the march toward fascism (Column, Jack Burgess, Chillicothe, Ohio Gazette)  June 16, 2024 OK, this is a really big deal. As the political season unfolds, the question is not just who will ..read more

St. Johns County has a proud tradition, after litigation, of protecting sea turtles. Alert citizens are on the job, and I salute them.  Thanks to Nicole Crosby, et al.  I fondly remember former Whitney  Lab scientist, yDr. Paul Linder, Ph.D., who earned some six (6) academic appointments at the University of Florida, who helped run the annual Gamble Rogers folk music festival.  Dr. Linser ran for the board of our Anastasia Mosquito Control District of St. Johns County, but was allegedly trashed by his opponent, Gary Howell, who once called Dr. Linser an "egghead and a queer ..read more
