Why Nevada advocates, businesses want Biden to expand work permits for the undocumented
The Nevada Independent

In September, President Joe Biden’s administration extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly half a million recent migrants from Venezuela.  The designation grants lawful legal status to these Venezuelans who arrived in the U.S. by July 31, under the president’s authority to protect migrants escaping disaster or unrest in 18-month increments. Practically, it makes these migrants legally eligible for employment authorization documents — work permits. The Venezuelan community in Las Vegas rejoiced at the news, meant to help cities with large influxes of migrants manage new arriva ..read more

Regents hike student fees 5 percent to fund 11 percent faculty pay raise
The Nevada Independent
by Jacob Solis

The Board of Regents in charge of Nevada’s public higher education system voted unanimously on Friday to approve a historically large 11 percent cost-of-living raise for faculty in 2025, a move many faculty have lauded as long overdue.  But that raise will be funded in part by an additional 5 percent hike in student registration fees, the largest one-year increase since 2012. That increase would add on to existing planned increases of 1.8 percent in fall 2024 and 2.7 percent in fall 2025.  “Frankly, this is a very difficult decision,” UNLV Graduate Student Association President Nicol ..read more

North Las Vegas’s city council is expected to reverse course on their appointment of Clark County high school teacher and City Councilman Isaac Barron to the district’s board of trustees amid legal questions about whether someone can hold those roles simultaneously.  The city council is considering appointing Dane Watson, an employee of the Clark County Education Association, the union that represents the district’s teachers, to the nonvoting seat instead at its Dec. 6 meeting, according to the agenda.  Barron was not available for an interview on Friday. But according to a staff rep ..read more

Elecciones 2024: Qué opinan nevadenses hispanos y de clase trabajadora
The Nevada Independent
by Luz Gray

The Nevada Independent

Six weeks after he was appointed to a nonvoting role on the Clark County School Board, state and local leaders still don't agree on whether there's a problem with North Las Vegas City Councilman Isaac Barron simultaneously holding the role on the school board, a day job at the district and his council seat. Barron is one of four new trustees who are joining the school board in January through appointments over the past two months by the Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson city councils and the Clark County commissioners as part of a 2023 bill, AB175. All have experience working in K-12 ed ..read more

The GOP needs to protect conservative principles
The Nevada Independent
by Hali Saylor

Conservative principles such as limited government and freedom of speech are currently under attack, with some in Congress threatening to dictate which apps Americans can or cannot have on their phones through legislation such as the RESTRICT Act. This does not bode well for the future of the Republican Party. Giving in to the temptation to ban TikTok would have lasting repercussions and create a dangerous precedent, not to mention the constitutional concerns it would create.  Frankly, it does not matter which company owns an online platform or where that platform is based. The Nevada Independent
by Carly Sauvageau

In a major legal test of a landmark 2019 law that allowed state workers to unionize, a Carson City judge ruled against Nevada’s largest state worker union Thursday, preserving a veto from Gov. Joe Lombardo that scuttled a $25 million appropriation funding a now-2-year-old state worker arbitration agreement. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 4041 sued the Lombardo administrationin September, pushing for a legal maneuver that, if approved, would have compelled the state to pay the $25 million arbitration award to boost salaries among workers in the e ..read more
