As we enter the third year of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we’re seeing an increased and inherent use of cyber and electromagnetic technology in the conflict. Reports suggest that Russia has deployed approximately one significant piece of electronic warfare equipment for every 10km of its 1,000km frontline, a substantial figure with the ability to vacuum up the electromagnetic spectrum and potentially direction-find and intercept signals of interest. In December 2023, the largest air attack on Ukraine was reported, comprised of missiles and an unprecedented number of drones.

It is common knowledge that passenger Wi-Fi on Britain’s trains is all too often painfully slow. However, Oxford Professor Dr Daniel Susskind, has recently shed some light on why old infrastructure and poor connectivity are highly problematic from an economic growth perspective. Commenting on the provision of free passenger Wi-Fi on trains, he goes as far as to say that,
“At a time when the British economy is on its knees, these are the sorts of low-hanging investments that we should seize. But we do not.”
The economics of rail passenger Wi-Fi
According to Dr Susskind, whilst scrapping on-bo ..read more

This article was originally published in COTS Journal on 27 November 2023.
Earlier this year, the renowned RUSI Journal reported that Ukraine is losing 10,000 UAVs per month, a substantial figure. While many commentators perceive these losses from the point of view of a shift toward mass procurement of disposable drones, the reality is that the electromagnetic signature of Ukraine’s drones is being detected by Russian forces, turning these assets into easy, defenseless targets.
While 5G cellular networks have brought new capabilities to military connectivity (high bandwidth, low late ..read more

Russia has been facing numerous administrative and logistical problems during their invasion of Ukraine. One significant problem has been connectivity, or lack thereof. According to RUSI, reports suggest that radio communications across the Russian forces are poor, leading to makeshift solutions including the use of unencrypted high frequency (HF) radio for long-range communications and mobile phones to communicate.
The use of such networks for military purposes is challenging due to the high probability of signal dete ..read more

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are forming an ever more important part of the defence and security industry’s arsenal, with much of the Russian-Ukraine conflict being undertaken using UAVs. Unmanned drones can undertake reconnaissance missions on a relatively small budget, as well as be used as part of a broader fleet to attack the enemy.
Connectivity challenges
Ensuring constant connectivity and capturing data from drones is vital, however, connectivity can also create the potential for detection from adversaries. It’s been reported that Ukraine has been losing up to 10,000 UAVs per month due ..read more
