The Welsh just get street food. Jonathan, the seaweed forager from Pembrokeshire, won the British Street Food Awards back in 2012 – and earnt Cafe Mor the right to trade in the Olympic village. Janet’s Authentic Northern Chinese won in 2019 with those dumplings hand-made on site. But they both started with a victory at the Welsh Street Food Awards. And with all the press interest around the finalists, this year promised to be more hotly contested than ever. El Cabron Tacos – started during lockdown, and bringing a real dedication to their work. We’re EXTRA excited about the Welsh Street Food Awards this year. Why? 1. The traders. 2. The judges. And 3. The hosts. DEPOT has been a cornerstone of Cardiff’s creative scene since its inception in 2015, hosting everything from street food raves to full-on festivals. Building on the venue’s success, the team launched Tiger Yard, a vibrant outdoor food court, this summer. Bingo. The perfect site for the 2023 Awards. Once the bustling heart of Cardiff’s coal export industry, Tiger Bay has undergone a remarkable transformation. This multicultural docklands area, home to communities from ov ..read more

We love Blue Collar. They know how to throw a proper party. So they were the obvious people to host the first heat of the 2023 British Street Food Awards. And what a heat it was, with over 3,000 people coming down to Reading across the weekend. There were 12 traders competing (see the full line-up below), but it was Hash Hut from London, with their beef cheek hash browns, that took home the title. And Amani Kitchen from Hitchin, with their delicious Iraqi fusion, that were voted the People’s Choice. We made the news. And we featured in BBC broadcasts THREE TIMES across the weekend. The city, w ..read more
