As the World Turns, It’s Not All About You | Golden Rules Gal   Read on if you know someone who constantly makes everything about themselves. It’s not unusual to know someone who’s self-centered, but when they have little consideration for others, it’s a sure sign of narcissism.   How to recognize the signs? Try these 9 on for size, and then imagine a world of complete empathy: 1. One-Sided Conversations. It’s all about monopoly, and I’m not referring to the board game.   2. Reciprocation.   If it doesn’t exist, then it means that you are the only one putting energy into th ..read more

8 Tips to Enhance Your Next Gambling Experience:   1.Understand the Rules before You Play.  If you’re unsure, ask the dealer.   2. Keep Your Gambling Drama Free and Follow Etiquette Rules. Everyone enjoys the game, but you must play by the rules, and in casinos, they are very specific.   3. Tip the Dealer.  This is a common practice whether you win or not. If a service is being performed, it warrants a gratuity.   4. Know Your Hand Signals. Don’t bid $100 when you mean $10.   5. Never Make Idle Conversation with the Dealer. Did you ever wish you could have lived in another era to see how communication would have been received? I’ve been thinking about writing this post ever since my husband and I traveled on the Orient Express. There was a guest during cocktails who was appalled at the dress of another younger woman. She shot us both a look of disgust then said simply, ‘Scandalous.’ We giggled about that moment the entire trip and I even wrote about it here.   That woman was from another generation, a generation where people were more respectful and polite. Nowadays, no topic seems to be off limits except th ..read more

Compliment Their Appearance. 80 is the new 60, and since I know many people (women) in their late eighties, I make it a point to comment on how terrific they look. Let Them Know They’re Appreciated. We have so much to learn from anyone older than we are. It’s a shame the way society shuns the older generation. At any given chance, say those three words everyone loves to hear x2: I appreciate you. I love you. Encourage Them to Take Good Care. My mother always used to say, “Health before wealth.” It’s harder to keep in shape as we age, but it doesn’t mean you can’t encourage the latest cha ..read more

I don’t know what made me remember this. Maybe because I’m writing this during my anniversary month, I thought about how lucky I’ve been to have a wonderful family and extended family. My aunt, Agnes, who hosted a bridal shower for me, had everyone ‘present’ me a note of advice. I thought it was archaic at the time, and I giggled when I read them aloud. But guess what? I never forgot them, and I use many to this day: Always come to breakfast with combed hair. Wear a dab of perfume on your neck. Kiss your husband good morning. Never go to bed angry. Wear lipstick. Agree to disagree. Never stre ..read more

If you’re tired of your tree ornaments year after year, it may be time for a change. Themes are fun, interactive, and can really show your personality when guests arrive. I have chosen a few of my favorites from the past, present, and future to brighten things up: London (Or Your Favorite City). I’m a royalist and Anglophile. When I traveled to London last October, I picked up ornaments that were all British. I then ordered a black and white wall mural of the city off Amazon. It made me feel like I was there in spirit!  Fantabulous! Streets of San Francisco. One Christmas I was out of ..read more
