Orphaned Black Bear Arrives at the Alaska Zoo View the full press release here (PDF) Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists brought a young orphaned black bear cub to the zoo for care on September 15th, 2020. The cub was given access to the zoo's infirmary yard early on September 16th after getting familiar with the enclosed den area. This black bear cub was orphaned in the Ketchikan, Alaska area. Zayk and Honey, Black Bears Together at Last! The Alaska Zoo's animal team has successfully introduced black bears Zayk and Honey to each other and zoo photographer John Gomes was there to capture their first interaction with each other. Zayk the zoo's 22-year-old black bear was successfully moved to the orphaned cub facility today (August 12) and will be let out in the outdoor yard tomorrow morning before the zoo opens (Thursday, August 13th) to meet his new companion Honey through the fence barrier. Visitors will see Zayk getting to know Honey starting at 10am tomorrow and for an undetermined period of time until they are moved back to the main black bear habitat together. Released March 16th, 2020: Given the announcement today regarding closures of dine-in services and other facilities in the Anchorage Municipality, we have consulted with city officials and will keep the zoo's trails open at this time. Our facility is primarily outdoors with trails that offer plenty of opportunity for social distancing and outdoor recreation. Our indoor program areas will remain closed until April 1st. Released March 13, 2020: Due to coronavirus (COVID-19) public health concerns, the Alaska Zoo will be taking precautionary measures for the safety of the public at our facility.
