Plumes of smoke drifted high over Old Town Wednesday morning as Alpine Forestry management crews started their spring-season pile burning work. Contracted by the city in 2021, Alpine Forestry — a forest management company founded by longtime wildland firefighters David Telian and Matthew Castellon — has been working on the 104 acres of Treasure Hill open space.  Now, they’re down to 15 acres of piles left to burn, racing against the weather before fire season starts and having lost an extra week on the project due to the resort’s extended season. But already the land has come a long way ..read more

There’s a band of horses grazing on a 20-acre parcel owned by Oakley City, but it could someday be transformed into a public access nature sanctuary for the living — and the dead. Summit Land Conservancy CEO Cheryl Fox and Starks Funeral Parlor owner Shayneh Starks this week presented the Oakley City Council with a proposal to put a conservation easement on the land and convert it into a green burial cemetery.  “The idea here is to create an income stream for the city of Oakley that will create enhancement and protection for a really beautiful  ..read more

The Miners boys lacrosse squad kept it rolling on their senior night Wednesday, defeating Highland 14-8. Park City was pushed past the Rams in a well-rounded effort. They stood tall on defense, turning stops into scores on the other end throughout the game. The Park City scoring started in the first quarter, where they poured in four goals. They didn’t give up their first until the second, then responding with four more to take a 8-1 lead into the break. The sizable leads at times, especially entering the fourth quarter (11-5) allowed Miners head coach Michael Persky to honor his seniors prope ..read more

Ridgelines: It’s hard to say goodbye

The early morning sun rising over the High Uintas cast shadows onto the rock-hard corduroy. A feeling of joy came over me as I set an edge in the snow, linking arcs down the frozen mountainside. It’s springtime in the Wasatch! But after 158 straight days, the lifts have stopped spinning. Springtime has come to Park City. Now it’s time to say goodbye. I love spring skiing! While I’ve never been much for the ski beach scene, costumes and revelry, it’s my favorite time of year to get out the groomer skis and rip turns every morning. These are the days of wide-arcing glory turns with an entire mou ..read more

Cottonwood spoils Miners boys soccer senior night

by Jack Singer   jsinger@parkrecord.com

The evening started off with positive energy for the Miners boys soccer team on senior night Tuesday, but that all dissipated late as the Cottonwood Colts played spoiler.  The Colts rolled into Dozier Field 2-8 (now 3-8) and shocked the now-3-7 Miners, breaking the long-lasting 0-0 stalemate with some late game heroics. With 12:30 remaining in the game’s second half, Cottonwood’s junior defenseman James Vaughan ripped in an acrobatic right-legged kick off his team’s corner kick. Despite Park City’s pressing efforts from that position, they were unfortunately unable to generate many qualit ..read more
