Location: Hollywood Theater, now known as Row House-Hollywood, in Dormont
Featured guests: Brian Mendelssohn, owner, and Kelsey Shea, marketing manager for Row House Cinema
3 things that surprised me:
1. The Hollywood Theater was built in 1926 when silent movies were the norm, and it employed a full-time organist to accompany every film. During the renovation, the team discovered green, leaf-patterned, velvet wallpaper but the plan is to reimagine the theater’s walls to look like something out of the classic sci-fi film “Metropolis.”

The hardest part of the Dicks Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon for Deborah Bryant of Homewood was trying not to dance when she was filling cups with electrolyte drinks.
While thousands of runners came from all over the world for the May 5 race, Bryant, like nearly all of the hundreds of volunteers on race day, was helping out in her hometown. Behind her was James Clark, otherwise known as DJ Goldtooth, who kept a funky beat going from 7 a.m. until noon.
The music, ostensibly, was to give the runners a lift, but it was the volunteers outside of Homewood House on Frankstown Avenue who were da ..read more

A surge in donations when people stayed home and cleared out their closets during the Covid-19 pandemic prompted Goodwill Southwestern Pennsylvania to provide $25 gift vouchers for those in need to obtain clothing, furniture and other essential items.
Donations to Goodwill have tapered off to a steady flow, but its Give Back Program was so successful that the nonprofit continued the initiative.
Since its launch in 2021, the program has allocated $785,000 worth of vouchers to other social services agencies that in turn distributed them to more than 26,000 disadvantaged individuals ..read more

There are plenty of fascinating museums to visit in the Pittsburgh area, and you might not realize that you’ve probably only heard of a fraction of them. “Hidden gem” is a moniker many of the museums on this list would rather leave behind. You’ll want to check each museum’s website before planning a visit, as many of these sites operate seasonally.

Ditch the screens and head to an Allegheny County park this summer … to look at a bigger screen.
If the Summer Concert Series isn’t enough outdoor entertainment, the county’s Summer Movies in the Parks calendar was also released on May 1.
The first film, Disney Pixar’s “Elemental,” will be screened at Deer Lakes Park Carp Field in Tarentum on Thursday, June 6. The series will continue weekly on Thursdays — except on July 4 — until Aug. 8 at different parks throughout the county.
Screenings are free but subject to weather. All begin at dusk — between 8:50 and 9:15 p.m. — and guests are encoura ..read more

Classical music often gets a reputation for being serious, traditional, even stiff. That’s something the members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra are cognizant of, and are working to counteract. A major piece of that effort is the Disrupt series, which the orchestra describes as “rewriting the rules of the symphony.”
“As a programmer, something I’m always thinking about is how I can continue to grow our art and what we do,” says Mary Persin, vice president of artistic planning for the PSO. “Thinking of ways to bring people closer to the music and the musicians is something that really fas ..read more
