Another interesting piece of wood with runic inscriptions has been found at the Medieval Park in Oslo. It was found in the same layer as the knife handle in the shape of a king with a falcon, which could suggest that this piece of wood is from around 1200 CE. It was also at this location that a large bone and a stick with runic inscriptions were found during the excavations in December 2021. Source: NIKU According to the archaeologists, this new discovery seems to be a medieval name-tag carved by a guy named Asbjørn who lived about 800 years ago. The piece of wood is approximately 11.4 centim ..read more

Today, we are going to take a look at the game Jotun: Valhalla Edition. This is a game that I have thought for quite some time looked interesting but somehow I never hit the purchase button, but I am glad that I finally did, and I will tell you why. The game takes place within Norse mythology. You play as the Viking warrior Thora who died an inglorious death, and must, therefore, prove herself to the Gods, so she can enter Valhalla. You travel around the different realms in order to solve puzzles, collect apples, and visit the shrines so you can be blessed by the gods. This makes you stronger ..read more

Norse Mythology

In 2018, the remains of a Viking ship and the first traces of an old settlement were discovered at Gjellestad outside Halden. This was the first time in more than one hundred years that a Viking ship had been discovered in Norway. The Gjellestad ship was found with the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR), a new technology that will most likely lead to a wealth of new discoveries. These discoveries have now placed Gjellestad once and for all on the map as an area of great cultural importance. There can no longer be any doubt that this area has been a central place from the late Nordic Iron A ..read more

In 2021, four graves dating back to the settlement period of Iceland were found during archeological excavations on the farm Fjörður by Seyðisfjörður in eastern Iceland. The findings were quite a surprise for the archeologists because they did not believe that there were older remains than from the 18th century in the area. But during their excavation, they noticed that a landslide dated to 1150 had sealed off parts of the area. Those of you who have read my article about the sunstones will know that this farm is near the mine where the Icelanders mined for Icelandic spar. Some believe that t ..read more

Just before Yule, the archaeologists Solveig Thorkildsen and Ingeborg Hornkjøl from the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU), found a rune bone and a rune stick a few days apart during the excavations in the Medieval Park in Oslo, Norway. Solveig Thorkildsen found the rune bone. A large rib with an inscription on both sides. The rune bone is probably from a large domestic animal such as a horse or a cow. But the bone has to undergo several examinations before this can be established. The rune stick was found by Ingeborg Hornkjøl. It lay in a deep ditch filled with water ..read more

April 30, 2021, was a special day for Frants Fugl Vestergaard who made a discovery of a lifetime on a newly plowed field at Bøvling in the western part of Jutland, Denmark. Frants was walking with his metal detector as he has done so many times before when he heard a small noise. Most people would probably have continued walking, but Frants was curious and picked up a small lump of earth and crushed it in his hand, and there it was, a small beautiful earring with enamel. “At first I was shocked, and then I became humble. It’s like getting a text message that’s 1000 years old. -Frants” Accordi ..read more

Nordic clinker boat traditions have been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as an important living cultural heritage, which must be safeguarded and preserved for future generations
Norse Mythology

The day has finally arrived where the ancient method of building clinker boats in northern Europe has been acknowledged by the international society as a part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Contrary to what some people may have been led to believe, the tradition of building clinker boats was not invented during the Viking Age, but it can be traced back thousands of years. These ancient ship-building traditions have, for instance, been depicted on stones dating back to the Bronze Age. The Nordic people are seafaring folk and have for generations used these kinds of ships to t ..read more

The Viking bones that were found in a misplaced box turned out to be from the famous Mammen grave
Norse Mythology

It is not every day that someone finds a box full of human remains, but that was exactly what happened recently when a researcher from the National Museum of Denmark found a box stashed away in the basement. The contents were immediately sent to the laboratory for testing, and it turned out to be the remains that were discovered at the Bjerringhøj burial mound in 1868. What is so special about this rediscovery is that these remains have been missing for more than 100 years. This kinda makes me wonder, what else is down there. It is careless to misplace a box full of human remains, but we are a ..read more
