At least 29 people were killed when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, just days before a tropical storm is expected to make landfall, and Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he was mobilizing all available government resources to help victims in the affected areas.
The epicenter of the quake was about 125 kilometres (78 miles) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, the US Geological Survey said, and widespread damage was reported.
Jerry Chandler, Haiti’s director of civil protection, told the AP that the death toll stood at 29 and that teams will be sent to the area for search a ..read more

Let me clarify at the outset that this is a hit piece on Jamyang Norbu, and a particularly underhanded one at that, because I write under a pseudonym. Weekend marches and sloganeering may be great for letting off some workaday stress while gathering plaudits for being a freedom fighter, but I’m perturbed by the recent uptick in misappropriation of the Rangzen flag as a cover for anti-Gadhen Phodrang manoeuvres.

Flooding in central China continued to cause havoc in both cities and rural areas, with authorities saying Friday that another 21 people had been killed and another four were missing.
Floodwaters rose to 3.5 metres (11.4 feet) in Hubei province’s Liulin township following heavy rains that began Wednesday.
The latest deaths add to the more than 300 people killed in flooding last month in Henan province just to the north. The vast majority of those victims were in Zhengzhou, Henan’s provincial capital, where at least 292 died, including 14 who were trapped when the city’s subway system was inund ..read more

Officers from the US and Taiwanese coast guards have met to discuss improving cooperation and communication despite efforts by China to isolate the self-governing island democracy.
The virtual meeting held Tuesday came amid moves by the US and others to defy Beijing’s pressure campaign aimed at compelling Taiwan to accept its view that the island is part of China.
China on Tuesday recalled its ambassador to Lithuania and expelled the Baltic nation’s top representative to Beijing over its decision to allow Taiwan to open an office in Lithuania under its own name.

Ten people were killed, 13 rescued and several others feared buried under debris after a landslide trapped a bus and other vehicles in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district on Wednesday, officials said.
A video clip captured the horror of the moment.
First, shooting stones fell down the mountainside into the river below, creating small splashes of water.
Warming whistles were heard and then a big chunk of the mountain collapsed on National Highway 5 and into the river.
Fighting to complete the operation before nightfall, rescue workers struggled to pull out survivors and bodies from the debris n ..read more

India sent a military plane to northern Afghanistan on Tuesday to pull out its citizens, officials said, as fighting raged between Afghan security forces and the advancing Taliban.

Islamist Taliban fighters have overrun six provincial capitals in recent days in the north, west and south of Afghanistan.
