The legendary band, ZZTop, took a hit seven days ago. Bassist Dusty Hill went to sleep on July 27th, 2021 and didn’t awaken the next morning. He was home in Texas at the time, having returned home from tour to deal with a hip issue. He was 72 years old. He’d been with ZZTop for 50 years. You can read more at Variety. I decided to make my own Tribute to a badass band. Silvertone, fine art, self portraits with an iPhone. You see, back in the day, ZZTop made me feel as if they could have been singing about me. And their videos? To a girl who had been bullied in High School by a bunch of mean gir ..read more

The Finer Things

Covid quietly shut down a small North Carolina factory. It was the last factory in America that made Lenox China. Lenox is still in business but their China will be made in other countries. If I had to guess, I’d say their new china is being made in China. The CEO who made this unfortunate decision is no longer employed there. Lenox is headquartered in Bristol, PA. If you aren’t aware of them, they are a leading producer of fine bone china, everyday dinnerware, glassware, kitchen, and giftware. Lenox also has Reed & Barton flatware and Kate Spade New York. It has the distinction of being t ..read more

Scott Mattlin is a modern impressionist artist that lives in Denver. Among his many amazing works is one that caught my interest as a photographer. He created a large painting called Gentle Morning Light. I love that painting. His use of light is beautifully rendered. Gentle Morning Light By Scott Mattlin. Denver. The woman in this particular painting looked a little like my friend Julie. Ah Julie. Let me tell you about my friend. I’ve known Julie since she was 13 years old and we snuck cigarettes in the girl’s bathroom in high school. We’re now 61. Sometimes, in these passing years, we haven ..read more

Renaissance Morning with Laura Sterling This story, today, is a love story. April 1st is Laura Sterling’s Birthday and it’s her love story. Happy Birthday Beautiful Laura. You are gift to Bluffton. You see the moss swaying from old oaks trees. You eat shrimp and grits. You hear a drawl in a native resident’s voice. You find camellias in winter and in spring, a profusion of gardenias, magnolias, tea olives, azaleas, and jasmine. Everywhere, jasmine. It’s a place of lush greenery, opulent vines, and sumptuous hedgerows. The trees embrace the sky with massive arms. You watch a glorious sunset th ..read more

Aerial Elements - Dancing with Silk

Lorrie Lancaster turned “Not Forty Any More” this month and, while she finds herself as surprised as the rest of us when this happens, I find her inspiring. Lorrie and her friend, Michelle, own Aerial Elements in Bluffton, SC. She does Aerial Silks and she does it beautifully. You can go to her site and learn about it. In fact, a Google search will quickly tell you that it’s a fun, full body exercise. It’s not as risky as it looks and doesn’t cost as much as you think. I haven’t yet found an adequate description, however, of how beautiful it is. It’s a little like a cross between the thrill of ..read more

Here on Iron Feather Tea, you normally see my fashion blog or maybe something about philosophy or art. But since my life got a little fragmented last year when my mom passed away, I’ve been going through the transitions that goes with losing a loved one. It’s made me appreciate more things and to better value some things I took for granted. View fullsize Lorraine’s Photo Session In an effort to heal some of the fractures, I’ve committed to pulling some of my different interests together under one umbrella, so to speak. (Hat tip to my friend Miri for the Rise Up Together Challenge during quara ..read more

QFT in Lounge Wear

Many of us haven’t been dressed in weeks. We’ve lounged around the house during the lockdown in sweats or other garments comfortable to our level of activity. Loungewear is THE Quarantine Fashion Trend. (The QFT!) I’ve been delighted because I have a love affair with uncommon dressing gowns. I have several sets of robes and night gowns so in honor of The QFT, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite boudoir-wear items. I’ve always believed that an object can be functional as well as beautiful. Nylon negligees, for all their slinky loveliness, itch. And they make you hot and then stick to your ..read more

Valentine Look

If I were going to brave the rose-laden streets of Valentine’s evening with my Fine Italian man, I’d probably wear this outfit. I bought the red satin top 11 years ago. I’ve worn it 4 times including this picture. Every time this luxurious blouse escapes my closet, except this photo, it has been on a Valentine’s dinner date with the afore mentioned Fine Italian Man. Also known as Peter. I’ve paired the top twice with a floor-length black skirt and once with wide-legged black trousers. In this picture, it’s paired with cute, valentine-print leggings. This is stepping out of my box because ..read more

Portrait of a Woman. Photography, model, styling, make up - Nancy Mac. 2020 I had an idea in mind and wanted to photograph something iconic to illustrate the idea. I recently saw a video wherein a street reporter asked random women to define being a woman. Some of them couldn’t seem to come up with a definition. I thought about it and it IS kind of hard. How do you define it? This two part post is my way. At least part of it. The above image is what I created with my camera. It’s an image that contains the mystery and symbolism of class ..read more

I hear women tell me they HATE pictures of themselves. I often hear this and I understand completely. This I know: Cameras are cruel, thoughtless creatures that LIE! Plus, the instant convenience of iPhones has not helped us. We just have MORE photos we don’t like. Selfies suck unless you’re under 30. So I wanted to reassure you. It takes a lot of time to create those gorgeous photos you see online. (Unless you’re very young and slouching is part of your charm.) As proof, I include two outtakes on the road to get the abo ..read more
