Sax chamber group

We do “morning ensembles” at my school and I lead our saxophone group, but basically all the saxophones just graduated besides me and one other kid. From the year we started we always held the reputation for having the best sounding group, but I feel like all that is about to change because we will have to get both inexperienced & less skilled musicians, disregarding the fact that we might not even have a baritone sax. There was a freshman last year who tried it out but he wasn’t serious about it at all so he quit saying he, “didn’t like my teaching style”. I think I might have to start l ..read more

Saxophone Notes go octave higher

Hey, everyone. It seems that all of a sudden my saxophone cannot play anything below maybe a standard g if I'm lucky, without the notes going on octave higher. Obviously I dont think this is an issue with my playing as I should definitely be able to play normal g/f without it going an octave higher, so I'm a little confused. I have a rented student model saxophone. Will I have to get this checked out? submitted by /u/Pretend_Koala_5293 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

So I’m a young classical saxophonist and i think I’m pretty good and most definitely way above average. But this year i got to watch my entire friend group audition and make NYO and various other summer groups that my instrument just was not a part of. It feels like all my work is going to nothing and i have no idea if i should stick with an instrument I’m passionate about or learn a secondary or what i should do at all. submitted by /u/Beastcastboi [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Are saxophones really better the higher the price? Is there something worth $2000 more in a king super 20 than a conn? submitted by /u/Shoddy-Narwhal1977 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey y’all! I’m working on ferling # 3, and there is a trill between middle C and D. Is there an alternate fingering for a trill like this, or am I going to have to just suck it up and deal with the bridge? Thanks so much!! submitted by /u/ComfortableAd1364 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey guys, I’ve been playing for about 5-6 years, and recently I’ve come to realize how terrible my tone is. Despite rigorous long tone excercises, my tone has stayed stagnant. I don’t believe it’s the horn however it could be, but I would like some tips on what to focus on, I haven’t been able to find anything that actually helps me submitted by /u/Your-Mothers-Tit [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Help with Overtones

I’m at AIT in the Army School of Music right now (hooah) studying to be an army musician. My private lesson instructor is having me work on overtones. I remember going over them in my undergrad degree but we didn’t go as in depth as we are here. I love doing them and have made tremendous improvement on them but for the life of me that first overtone over low b-flat, the middle b-flat, can’t speak clearly or consistently. It also wants to jump back down to the root b-flat. It’s annoying as hell. Any tips? Literally every other overtone minus the really high altissimo ones speak clearly except ..read more

Son wants to get started with an alto. Dug up my old sax, and it needs a massive overhaul. But shop made me an offer to trade it in...

Looing for advice and feedback: overhaul or buy? We have an Evette Buffet Crampon from when I started playing in elementary school--I'm told they haven’t made this model for years. I'd played it happily for at least 15 years, then let my brother use for his school band career, before it got put into storage. We just retrieved it and it needs a $1k overhaul, which is justified given the current state of it. Shop is offering a discount if we trade it in, to get a Chateau VAS-510DE for $1.5k. My son is somewhat indifferent as he just wants an instrument to play, but acknowledges the family histo ..read more

Critique this please (2y of playing, having trouble with my sound for the past 6m - it doesn't have that "tenor quality" - deep, rich, full, plus I'm getting comments that I'm just "playing the right notes", there's no "feel"
