Health Through Posture

This client came to see me because she was unhappy with the appearance of her posture. It had bothered her for many years and affected her confidence. I examined her posture from the side view (click image above to enlarge) and noticed that she was very slouched in her upper back, head and shoulders. We went through a few posture correction exercises during that initial session and I made sure she could do them all comfortably. Her ‘homework’ was to do them everyday and to come back in a week. When she returned I checked that she was doing each exercise correctly and added a few new ones in t ..read more

This client came to see me because he wanted to reduce his risk of future pain and injuries, and age well by improving his posture – a very proactive mindset! When you look at the photo above what do you notice? Can you see that his hips were forward of his ankles, and his upper back was excessively rounded or hunched, causing his head and shoulders to come forward?   We did 5 posture correction exercises during our first session and I checked he could do them all comfortably and correctly. I told him to do them everyday and to come back within a week. When he returned I checked hi ..read more

Reducing risk of pain and injuries case study
Health Through Posture

This client came to see me because he wanted to reduce his risk of future pain and injuries by improving his posture, a proactive mindset! When I examined his posture from the side view (click image above to enlarge) two areas jumped out to me. First, his hips were very forward of his ankles, and second, his head was protruding very far forward. In my experience, these imbalances are often linked with pain in various parts of the body. We did 5 posture correction exercises during the first session and I checked he could do them all with no discomfort. Away he went with his homework which was ..read more

Health Through Posture

Here is some advice for keeping your body balanced and pain free if you’re working from home or in the office. The image above shows you an ‘ideal’ home workstation setup. The key pointers are: Screen approximately at eye level Shoulders relaxed External keyboard and mouse 90 degree angle at elbow and knee Pelvis rolled forward gently to put a small arch in lower back Feet flat on floor (use foot stand if your feet can’t reach the floor) For a standing desk setup all of the above principles apply except for rolling your pelvis forward and of course maintaining a 90 degree angle ..read more

Eliminating back pain case study
Health Through Posture

When this client came to see me he’d been suffering with back pain for many years. The pain was at a constant low level but could get worse at times. Over the years he’d tried many different therapies, including physiotherapy and strengthening exercises, but had only found temporary relief. When I examined his posture from the side view I saw that his upper back was rounded forward excessively or ‘hunched’. This was causing his shoulders and head to push forward and I thought this could be causing negative compensations within his back. But if I just focused on improving this area then I wou ..read more

Eliminating headaches, neck, back, shoulder and arm pain case study
Health Through Posture

When this client came into the clinic she’d been suffering with pain on one side of her upper back for over ten years. She said the pain was always there, sometimes worse, sometimes better, but every couple of months it got so bad that it would progress to her neck, arm, and shoulder. Her hand would tremble and she would get headaches. No one could solve the problem, even after seeing many different therapists, an MRI, and x-ray. When you look at her posture what do you notice? Can you see how her shoulders and head were rounding forward? I was confident this was co ..read more

Eliminating lower back disc pain & spasms (over zoom) case study
Health Through Posture

When this client came to see me his body was in a classic protective posture and spasm, potentially due to a disc bulge or herniation in his lower back. His movement was severely reduced, he was bedridden at times and in pain.  Can you see how his knees were bent, his pelvis was tucked under, and his upper body was leaning forward? He felt stuck in this position and couldn’t straighten up. I explained to him that his body was keeping him in this posture in an attempt to prevent further damage to his back. We needed to do two things: 1) safely get him back to his ‘normal’ posture, that i ..read more

This client came to see me because the appearance of her ‘hunched’ posture had bothered her for several decades. She often noticed this when she walked down the street and saw her reflection in a shop window, especially when wearing certain types of clothing. I examined her posture from the side view (click image above to enlarge) and noticed that her upper back, head and shoulders were indeed rounding forward. I knew she wanted me to focus on this area, but if I’d only looked at that part of her body I’d have been doing her a disservice. As part of my posture correction approach I look at t ..read more

When this client came to see me, his hip pain had been worsening over the course of four years. He’d given up running and even walking was very painful at times. He’d seen specialist doctors, but found no relief. He had begun to think that the pain was something he would just have to accept. When I examined his posture I was surprised by the sheer number of postural misalignments! What do you notice? From the front view, his feet were in very different positions, a sign that his hips were working differently left to right. His body was leaning to the right, which was compressing that side ..read more

How to overcome low back pain
Health Through Posture

The number one symptom that people who come to see me have is lower back pain. I read a statistic recently in a newspaper that it was the leading cause of disability in the world. I’ve had clients where it is a mild annoyance, to clients where it is ruining their lives. Why is lower back pain so common? In this video I try to explain why I think so many people suffer from it and why I think in many cases posture correction exercises could help get them pain free. [If you’d like to receive the three exercises I mentioned in the video then sign up to my free newsletter by clicking here.] A good ..read more
