What size reed should I use as an adult returning to lessons after 10 years not playing?

My first adult lesson is this Sunday. I used a size 3 about 10 years ago when I last touched my clarinet. When I started playing in elementary school, they started me on a size 2. My embouchure was always extremely weak even at the height of my practice (1 hr/day with lots and lots and LOTS of double-lipped long tones). I also recall starting with Mitchell Lurie and eventually “graduating” to Vandoren reeds. I’m thinking maybe I’ll get 2 1/2 Mitchell Lurie for my lesson and go from there, but advice is greatly appreciated as I have no idea what I’m doing. Also I will note that I attempted to ..read more

Eb clarinet with yellowed keys

This is one of my school's instruments and hasn't been played as long as my current band director, who is about to retire, has been here. It has this weird yellow stuff all over the keys. I'm pretty sure this isn't the metal under the plating as it's actually missing where fingers go. Does anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it? I couldn't find anything online, though it's possible I didn't know the keywords to use. Thanks :) submitted by /u/FeatherFawkes [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Just for grins - here is the Upper Joint of a Buffet Greenline R13 Clarinet. Note: not shown, there is also (at least) one green dot on the underside which is used to line up the bridge key IMMSMR. Happy Clarinet-ing ! submitted by /u/cpaok999 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Re- learning

Hi I played the clarinet as a child (age 8 to 11) before stopping because they didn’t offer tuition at secondary school. I had to return the clarinet that was loaned to me by the government. I remember enjoying it a lot and am considering taking it up again. Could I reasonably expect to teach myself? Obviously 90% of my knowledge has been lost. Also what model would be right for me? I don’t want to buy one that I would need to upgrade within a few years. submitted by /u/sirl333 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I'm an adult (29) who wants to pick up playing an instrument again as a hobby after not weven touching one for over 10 years. Something about the clarinet caught my eye, and I want to learn froms cratch. My previous experience was all on the trumpet and as much as I love it something is drawing me more towards something new now. Question is, what kinds of horns are a good jumping in point for an absolute beginner, and are used prices decent enough for that to be an option? my trumpet i had for years was a used bargain bin trumpet that apparently was a decent brand somehow, served me well for ..read more

I was messing around with a tuner and personally I'd be happy with plus or minus 5 or so. What are the standards for pros? How about amateurs? submitted by /u/highspeed_steel [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I picked this clarinet up a couple of weeks ago, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out the model. As you can see, it’s Allora brand, but the only thing I can find on it is a serial number (1604046). submitted by /u/afheels135 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
