He had the creative heart of a composer… His publications sang with beauty, wisdom, sensitivity, imagination and vision. He believed in music’s enduring value to be respected, admired, loved, and pure. He believed in my teacher Kalman Opperman and championed his method books. He believed in my wife Mika and published her transcription of Bach’s CHACCONE, attending her New York premiere at Carnegie Recital Hall. When Elliott Carter’s GRA first appeared on the clarinet scene I decided this must be a piece I should try to play. Like many clarinetists, I had gotten a lot of miles out of the old Stravinsky “Three Pieces” written some 84 years before Carter, and Gra had started showing up in master classes around the US and Canada.    What do my Grandma and Messiaen have in common? They have both listened to me.   As a beginner I can remember taking my metal clarinet out of its long leather case, blowing into the mouthpiece and sounding a song of squeaks, squawks, and tones.    I was so fortunate that my parents, who really could not afford to spend money on private lessons, considered my relentless returning to that metal clarinet a sign that I should have a teacher. RECIPE - Makes one 9-inch torte 1 cup (2 sticks) cold butter, cut into chunks 1/2 cup sugar plus 1 tablespoon for egg white 2 egg yolks (reserve 1 egg white) 1 tablespoon water 2 cups whole almonds 1 scant cup flour 1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 6-8 ounces raspberry jam Unsweetened or lightly sweetened whipped cream (for serving, optional) 1.
