I'm looking for music I can play with someone else as a beginner bassoonist. I've been working my way through Weissenborn, and have co-opted several pieces written for the cello, but haven't found much else for players at my level. Any suggestions would be welcome! submitted by /u/Blueblueballou [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Good bassoon pieces for wind band?

Hey y’all, my wind ensemble director is programming for next year and taking suggestions for pieces, in the years I’ve been here I haven’t had that many hard parts/big moments, so I wanted to suggest a piece or two with some good bassoon. Does anyone have any suggestions? For context, the wind ensemble is the top group at my university and I have not seen a piece that was too difficult for us. This is not meant at all as a brag, but just wanted y’all to know that there you should not have to worry about a piece being too difficult. submitted by /u/BRBean [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

My first two prototype reed knives! Hand forged 52100, one with purple heart and Birdseye maple and the other with ebony and black palm. Both with bronze spacers.

Hi guys! First time poster here. I’m wondering how you navigate students wanting to try bassoon but not wanting to commit to renting/buying their own instrument yet? I’m repeatedly being asked to let said students try one of my instruments to see if they have a natural aptitude for it/if they enjoy it but with illnesses/COVID, I don’t really want to let anyone use my professional instrument that I use daily. Do you own a student bassoon for this? Or clean your bassoon super thoroughly? Different bocal and make them buy their own reed? Perhaps you say no until they commit to hiring an instrume ..read more

Writing for bassoon

For Context: I challenged my teacher to a music writing competition, and my piece (The Inferno) has a bassoon opening solo accompanied by the bass trombone and tuba. My question is which range do you guys prefer to play in for solos? The range of the solo is B4 to B1. Let me know which range you prefer to play in for solos. submitted by /u/Champion5000plus [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Reed Market

So I have been thinking of making and selling reeds for quite a while now and the only thing that has stopped me was the price of the equipment and resources necessary to start production on any sort of scale. For a little bit of backstory, I played bassoon from 8th grade all the way through undergrad and made successful reeds for my early 80s Schreiber (and that’s a feat in itself). Would there be demand for a reed that was tested and intended for that type of bassoon? What should a finished reed cost? Would it be worth it? TDLR: I want to buy a bassoon I played bassoon for one year about 8 years ago and it was fun. I’d like to start playing again and I want to buy one for cheap. As I live in a small country in Europe there are not many for sale (used) in my country that are at an affordable price. I found one called Rosedale for sale at gear4music. As I will only play for fun (since my main instrument is a brass instrument) and only once in a while with a band I do not want to spend many thousands buying it. Also I found a Huller bassoon for sale for about 500$ more. Over to my question. In fear of “swearing in ..read more

My first reed!

Okay that title is a bit misleading because I don't have the reed and I'm just looking for advice on what kind of reed to get. So, I have no idea yet on whether or not I'll actually be able to play a bassoon because one of my teachers/directors said that he was going to look and see if there was a free bassoon owned by the school that I could play and told me to buy my own reed. But I am asking this question just in case. Though, I hope he actually went to look because he has told me that he would check and forgot each time lol. I think if I ask him about it tmr he's going to go like, "Oh I f ..read more
