Another Hexinverter Mutant has just been reissued by Erica Synths!
This time it’s the Hot Glue!
The Hot Glue is a very specific mixer module in the Eurorack Landscape: unlike other offerings, it’s highly focused on mixing and processing drums.
The Mutant Hot Glue is a versatile bus mixer for analog effects chain design. The included analog compressor offers series or parallel compression and a sidechain input, making it particularly well suited to drum processing. The distortion can be used in its default position, normalized to the effects send, or like every other part of the module, broke ..read more

A quick heads up, since I’ve been working with Olympia Noise on the new version of Patterning. I have been involved for the icons, colour palette, the new logo and some promo artwork, together with some minor consulting on the UI.
I think it’s a really cool sample-based drum machine app, with a few interesting features. Worth checking out if you’re into iOS apps and drum machines.

A short film I directed (and co-wrote with my Brother) 26 years ago during film school, just resurfaced. The internet does not forget
Also some memories about it and the shooting (in German):

Despite it being very dated from various points of view, I still kind of like how it turned out ..read more

A discussion on the internet forum lines, which I think is really worth checking out:
The resource leak bug of our civilization
The introductory post, by Brian Crabtree aka tehn – which could as well have been a blog post, or an article – talks about how our computing systems are inherently wasteful and bloated. Every time I download a simple utility and see that it weights 500Mb or more I get reminded of this.
In the meantime, people create whole animations in 256 bytes. And I think it’s worth stressing bytes. Of course this is art, and not an application to get things done, but it still tel ..read more

A collection of links, videos and random finding from the web
Let’s start with something funny, found out about this through the active UX of Musical Instruments discussion on lines:
The worst volume control UI in the world
Did you know you could make mid-century furniture out of coathangers? Now you do: Design nordico “homemade” (in Italian) The book is only available in Italian for now (at least as far as I know)

I’ve recently been asked to create an illustration for the theatrical play Wolpertinger – In Progress by Benno Heisel, playing later in April, in its “tryout version” at the Rationaltheater Munich.
You’ve never seen a show like this before. We promise. Wolpertinger – in Progress is a unique mixture of object and puppet theater, robotics and stand-up comedy. […]

Finally got around making a dedicated portfolio website for my illustration work!
In the spirit of BeYourOwnPlatform it’s self-hosted and static. Also, it’s all nicely self-contained and completely cookie-free.

Photo: Zombie REC Audio
Over the last couple of years I’ve been working on the UI and graphic design for this high-end rack-mount bass enhancer/shaper and its companion DAW plug-in (which lets you control the hardware from the computer) called Mammut, by the Swiss company Zombie REC Audio.
It’s been a great experience. Not only did I get to work on a custom knob design (you can see some prototypes below), but the project as a whole has been very much down my alley. While I’ve been occasionally working on minimal and functionalist designs, I am more and more convinced that we need to re-learn t ..read more

I’m a bit late with this one, since it’s been out for some time already. As part of Erica Synths’ Hexinverter reissue program they have now launched the Mutant Machine. This new version comes with a handy trigger button that allows you to preview the drum sound while tweaking the patch. Everything else is exactly the same as the original.
Personally this is one of my favourite Hexinverter panels, I’m really happy with how the subtle relief patterns on the membrane and snappy sections turned out!
