White Paper on immigration fails Africa’s free trade aspirations
Mail & Guardian
by Des Erasmus
13h ago
Arguably no issue gets countries riled up more than immigration. Most of the threats to the global order over the past decade or so have been the emergence of leaders who endorse a sort of protectionism and “securing the borders”.  Immigration is a hot topic in the world and on the African continent, because it is inextricably linked to other aspects of the current economic era, such as globalisation, multiculturalism and diversity.  The Protocol to the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) on Investment is very clear about its stance on immigration ..read more

‘My suspension is not justified,’ MEC Mandla Msibi tells Mpumalanga premier
Mail & Guardian
by Eyaaz
13h ago
Mpumalanga’s cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC, Mandla Msibi, has told Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane that he was “not convinced” his special leave from office was based on his performance and thus cannot be justified. The decision came two weeks after ANC provincial secretary Muzi Chirwa announced that the party had suspended Msibi, then the party’s provincial treasurer, for three years, two years of which have been lifted on condition he does not commit the same offence.   In a letter to Mtsweni-Tsipane, signed by Msibi and dated 18 April, he said he was busy with ..read more

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi opened the department’s first office at a super mall in KwaZulu-Natal, the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Durban, on Monday. Motsoaledi said the new office, the third to open at a mall, had been preceded by the opening of branches at Menlyn Park in Pretoria and Cresta Mall in Johannesburg over the past two weeks. Motsoaledi said the Pavilion office, which had a soft opening to the public on 12 April, had already processed 238 identity documents and 142 passport applications. “Some of the documents are already here to be handed over to their owners,” he said ..read more

Lessons from Senegal: The role of the electorate in driving political change
Mail & Guardian
by Eyaaz
16h ago
The recent presidential elections in Senegal took place against a backdrop of constitutional disputes and widespread political fervour. This was after the Constitutional Council overturned former President Mack Sall’s decree postponing the election, declaring it unconstitutional. This election signalled the end of Sall’s 12-year rule and, with 17 candidates vying to succeed him, it was the most competitive presidential race since Senegal’s independence from France in 1960.  It also marked the culmination of a contentious political dispute over the date of the election, which began when Sa ..read more

The impact of Citizens United on American democracy and campaign finance
Mail & Guardian
by Des Erasmus
18h ago
In 2010, the supreme court’s landmark ruling in Citizens United vs Federal Election Commission reshaped the landscape of American political financing. This decision, which granted corporations and donors unlimited spending rights in federal elections, unleashed a torrent of money into political campaigns.  The five to four decision rested on the belief that transparency through disclosure would serve as a safeguard against corruption. But the aftermath of Citizens United gave birth to a proliferation of political action committees, these super PACs and “dark-money” groups, shielded from d ..read more

Agricultural machinery sales down
Mail & Guardian
by Eyaaz
19h ago
I have previously stated on these pages that South Africa’s agricultural machinery sales will probably be weak this year. The recent data continue to support this view. For example, in March, tractor sales were down 26% year-on-year, with 498 units sold. The combine harvester sales were down 33% year-on-year, with 26 units sold.  This moderation of the South African agricultural machinery sales should not worry us much. It primarily reflects the normalisation of sales after a few years of robust activity.  To remind us of such excellent years, consider the 2022 South African tractor ..read more

Meyiwa trial: ‘Longwe shot Senzo Meyiwa’
Mail & Guardian
by Eyaaz
19h ago
Defence advocate Thulani Mngomezulu told the court on Wednesday that the evidence from the investigators of the Senzo Meyiwa murder was far from the truth and the accused did not kill the footballer.  Mngomezulu stressed that the evidence he had showed that Meyiwa was shot while trying to end a fight between Zandile Khumalo (sister to Meyiwa’s girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo) and Longwe Thwala. Khumalo, who was in the Khumalo house when Meyiwa was shot on 26 October 2014, in Vosloorus, Gauteng, took the stand as the state’s first witness and said two intruders entered the house and Meyiwa was s ..read more
