Sapwood on vintage pipes

I have noticed that the presence of sapwood on pre-1900 pipes is usually associated with cocus wood, especially on old Glen sets but often on other makers as well. I have read that cocus was the wood of first choice and blackwood only became more commonly used after 1900 or so as cocus became more rare. My question is: does the presence of sapwood on a set indicate the material is cocus or was this also a practice on blackwood pipes? Also, can anyone shed any light on why the use of sapwood was considered acceptable, perhaps even favourable amongst makers. Why do we never see it on modern pipe ..read more

Pointing Expression Of Old Tunes?

Going through some of the old collections on the Ceol Sean site, and even some of the tunes in Scots Guards, Gordon, and Seaforth collections, I notice some of the marches are written with no dot-cut pointing. For example, the first tune in the Ceol Sean master index: 1/5 Seaforth Highlanders Welcome To France https://ceolsean.net/content/Pwar/Bo...ok01%2021a.pdf While it doesn't sound all too great played in a round fashion as some might read it, playing it pointed leaves some questions as to what note to lean on in a 16th note run. Long short Long short/Long short short Long/ or short Long ..read more

Burns Night Piping and Address to the Haggis Video?
Bob Dunsire Bagpipe Forums

Hi, I just went looking for a YouTube video of piping in the haggis and the address. Despite many pages of videos, most of them had only the piping in and no address or the opposite, several had some other combination of poor piping, horrible tuning, tartan skirts made from old curtains, motocross boots, ridiculous fake Scottish accents etc. Not saying I could do a lot better myself (except maybe on the skirt) but I know better than to try and then post it on YouTube :). Can anyone recommend (and link) a video with decent piping and the address, without most of the aforementioned cringe-wort ..read more

Can we request (after migration) a longer dwell-time on topics in this subforum?

Since this is a small and slow-moving sub, I ponder whether we can ask the Admins to extend the time period posts are available on this subforum before being archived. I think that even if we had a six-month period before archiving, we'd still have a full page of topics that folks could respond to or read at their leisure. Just putting the idea out there for community thought, to be addressed once forum migration to the new servers is complete, since that is presumably the focus of Admin attention ..read more

Help with Posture, Bag Setup

Hi Everyone, I’m returning to piping after a long hiatus and am about to get a new set of pipes. This is a picture of me playing a set of Naills with a regular L&M hide bag about 20 years ago. That’s an 11” blowpipe. Looking back at this picture, several things come to mind: 1) The bag seems too big and I’m struggling to reach around it with my forearm (and it’s also rubbing against my forearm big time). 2) My wrists are both angled up slightly, but I’ve seen other pipers do this too. I could probably correct the right wrist fairly easily. 3) I’m pulling the chanter way in towards me (prob ..read more

James Livingston, Toun Piper of Haddington

Would/could anyone provide me a high-resolution copy of the image of "James Livingston, Piper and Andrew Simpson, Drummer of Haddington followed by a local 'silly lad' Harry Barrie" ? There have been several reproductions of this image in Common Stock, but the resolution of each - at least in my copies - is quite low. I understand that there is a painting and 3 extent engravings of this scene - are all three engravings from the same plate (engraved by R Mabon) or is one or two the work of a different artist/engraver? This for a planned article to be submitted to CS and also to this forum. Tha ..read more

Is anyone still updating the BobDunsire.com main site itself?

I was looking at BobDunsire.com because I ran across their list of links of pipe makers. I found a couple really cool makers I hadn't heard of (like a guy in Croatia who sells traditional Croatian bagpipes), but noted a ton of the links were obsolete. I tried to email the suggested link for updates, got a bounceback, and the same for the "bd@" email on the main page. Is the overall BD page (aside from these forums) basically abandoned, or is there some intent to get it going, or is it going to become obsolete and shut down after the forum migration ..read more
