Often, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there is a tendency to focus on the ongoing and future fight against breast cancer. But in this month when RMI’s team is going full bore to support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer by the American Cancer Society, it’s good to look back at how far we’ve come.
It’s not that statistics are good – even one incidence, let alone one death, is one too many. But the trend lines are showing some heartening news.
Incidence Rates of breast cancer
Incidence rates (i.e. new cases) have been slowly dropping over the years. One reason for this may actually be ..read more

Today’s blog is about Contrast-Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM), a powerful new tool we are using to diagnose potential breast cancer. As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, RMI is pleased to offer 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) at our locations in Flint and Novi. Those same machines can be used for CESM, which is a diagnostic exam.
As a reminder, a screening exam is used to spot potential areas of concern in the breast. A diagnostic exam, in this case, is used when something is seen that is of concern. It is a more comprehensive imaging exam designed to determine if there is actual cancer ..read more

A 3D Mammogram (Tomosynthesis) is a relatively new screening for women being offered by Regional Medical Imaging at our offices on Lennon Road, Flint and Novi.
We’re offering this as part of our array of women’s imaging tools to detect breast cancer. As stated in prior posts, one in eight women will develop breast cancer over the course of their lives. Mammography exams allow radiologists to detect possible abnormalities at early stages when it’s most treatable.
How does 3D Mammography Work?
Like a regular mammogram, tomosynthesis works by using low-dose x-rays to create an image of the inside ..read more

While some myths are enjoyable, CT lung screening myths are not helpful. Such myths could prevent current and former smokers from getting the exam they need.
Storytelling, oral traditions, wild tales, the “spooky ghost stories” of that holiday song are all part of the human experience. Those are fun things. But you, or your loved one, need the facts about CT lung screenings. Let’s examine a few myths, and debunk them so you can make informed decisions:
I quit smoking, so I don’t need CT lung screening
False. If you quit within the last 15 years, and are age 55+, a lung screening is very much ..read more

Shopping and comparing cash prices for medical imaging exams is quickly become a necessity rather than simply a good idea. This is especially true in an era of high deductibles and co-pays, when it may be wiser to pay out-of-pocket instead of simply paying down a deductible.
The end of the year is upon us, and the expiration to sign up for either the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) or your company’s insurance has most likely passed. So it is worth the effort to review your policy, and see how much you need to chip in out-of-pocket for medical imaging. You may be surprised.
Knowing this, it’s ..read more

This holiday season, give a gift to your loved one that really illustrates how much you care – low-dose CT lung screening for lung cancer. It is a gift of life!
It may seem unusual to give an imaging exam as a gift. Indeed, it may be a very hard gift to give. But it is a gift that resoundingly states “I love you and want you to be around for a long time.”
Your loved one – whether they are a parent, sibling, spouse or even a dear friend – has a habit that could, and most likely will, lead to serious illness and death. The facts are clear about that. But as stated in last month’s blog “Ignorance ..read more

Is it rational to have a fear of CT lung screening? Is it better to not know about lung cancer? It is a truism in the medical community that many times, for many reasons, people do not want to know about their health risks – especially when it is based on their own behavior.
We all have habits – some good, some bad. With issues such as smoking and the risk of lung cancer, it is best to catch it early so we can be there for our loved ones. While some lung cancer can arise from toxins in the environment or workplace, smoking continues to be the primary cause (80%) for lung cancer, according to t ..read more
