Today I posted on my Becki P Printmaker facebook page an intention to ‘get my work out there’ and received some fabulous feedback from fellow creative friends. The image that went with this post was this: So I am attempting to work with those doubts and use them to fuel my creative process or at least try to accept them as part of the process. Here we go! I was inspired with some of the words from this website: https://thecreativeindependent.com/approaches/theme-putting-your-work-out-there ..read more

Have been back in my studio after a far too long hiatus. Bit rusty but felt good to get working again. Last minute as usual but 2 layers down, 1 to go for Surface Gallery postcard show- the deadline is tomorrow at 6! At least it’s local so should be able to get them dine, dried and submitted by then. Either way has given me a focus to get going again for a new year of printing ..read more

New thoughts
OCA Printmaking Blog

as one year ends and a brand new one is about to begin I am finding myself pondering, as most of us do, and musing, reflecting on what has been and what is/may be to come. I used to write down ideas for what i hoped to achieve in the coming year, not ‘resolutions’ as they tend to be things to ‘give up’ eg stop smoking, lose weight and seemed negative somehow and not full of the excitement I always felt at the possibilities of starting anew with a whole brand new year. I would try and write down aspirational but achievable ideas, goals I guess and then put them away until the following year whe ..read more

Still inspired to research and record my research I have been delving further into areas of interest including Abstraction, experimentation, motifs and symbols. Reading this article about Black Mountain College women artists has sparked an afternoon of reading and watching documentaries about this inspiring art school. Black Mountain college ran from 1933-1956 in North Carolina and those who studied there went on to create inspiring and innovative art, poetry, dance and performance art. The original ethos was that the arts were critical to creating well-rounded citizens – something most ..read more

Personal Profile Growing up in London in the 70’s & 80’s my creative life began with an interest in fashion, embroidery, textiles, vintage looks. As a teenager I found myself in and around different subcultures with different ways of expressing themselves and a DIY approach to life. I started at London College of Fashion but it wasn’t for me. So…. I moved to Nottingham, and studied at the art college where I now teach. I fell in love with printmaking and photography and went on to gain a Fine Art Degree (Painting and Printmaking) in Sheffield via San Jose University and San Francisco.  ..read more

Supporting statement – final project  Introduction – initial ideas. Having been set the project to produce a series of 4 connected prints based on a theme and not wanting to go down the obvious route eg seasons, I looked to me previous work and decided to develop a small print idea I had worked on for the IPE (International Print Exchange). The initial idea was inspired by the book ‘Experiments for the Future’ and a diary entry by Aleksander Rodchenko, a Russian avant-garde artist who worked in numerous media and was part of the Russian Constructivists art movement. The diary en ..read more

Interview with artist Laine Tompkinson – January 2018 “Laine’s printmaking practice deserves wider acclaim. Her painterly approach and unerring sense of colour produce prints that are both dynamic and beautiful. She is becoming hot property in printmaking circles- a true printmaker’s printmaker” Lucy Philips, Director, Leicester Print Workshop I caught up with Laine over a cup of fruit tea in her homely studio in Olknows factory today. I first met her when she arrived to share a space in 5B in the same building around 4 years ago where I also had a studio. Laine was at that time using sc ..read more

Project 13 – Combination mono and linoprint

Outcome – series of prints I wanted to try the technique of caustic soda etching of lino for a previous project – but didn’t have the time, so this was an ideal opportunity to try this out. I had originally bought the caustic soda for assignment 3 and it had been knocking around since then. The process needs to use the old fashioned linseed oil, hessian backed lino material to work, and then areas to be left are to covered in some kind of resist. Examples of resistant materials that can be used for this process are; parcel tape, candle wax….. I decided to use simple masked areas of tape in d ..read more
