Frogeye leaf spot lesions as observed in the upper most foliage. The entries contained in the 2023 Mississippi State University Official Variety Trials (OVT) were evaluated for their reaction to several important plant diseases during the 2023 season.  Disease severity differed across locations and as a result some locations had little to no disease present.  The OVT location at Verona, MS; however, served as the best information for the response of the entries contained in the OVT to frogeye leaf spot.  A total of 11 locations were conducted during 2023, with Verona as the o ..read more

Bacterial leaf streak can appear similar to stripe rust; however, no spores will be present. In general, the wheat crop this season looks to be in good shape, despite a wetter than normal month.  However, now is generally the time of the year when most foliar disease issues begin to be observed.  More wheat is generally scouted once the flag leaf emerges and the head starts to come out of the boot.  With that in mind, there are a few “important” diseases that can be observed this time of the year.  Some can be more problematic than others, and some should be paid attenti ..read more

When is the Cut-Off Date for Planting Corn?

Persistent rains have limited corn planting progress in Mississippi once again this spring. It is well known that corn is normally more productive when planted early, primarily because its’ sensitive reproductive development will occur earlier in the summer when environmental conditions are normally more favorable. However, as with most cropping decisions, planting date is not the only variable affecting profitability. For example, the highest yielding corn in the NCGA Yield Contest grown in Mississippi during the last several years was planted in May. Therefore, several factors determine cro ..read more

Stem canker lesions on a susceptible variety. All of the entries contained in the 2023 Mississippi State University Official Variety Trials (OVT) were evaluated for their reaction to the fungus that causes stem canker.  In addition, a few varieties (not including the checks used) were added to supplement the trials and obtain information on those particular varieties that were not entered by the respective seed companies in the MSU-OVT.  Trials consisted of single rows of each cultivar planted in 10 foot plots and replicated 4 times.  Within each row, a total of 10 plants wer ..read more

Red rice Weed Flora of Mississippi Prepared by Taghi Bararpour and Jason Bond  Family: Poaceae Genus: Oryza       Species: sativa History: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an Asian species. China is thought to be its center of origin (Vaughan et al., 2005). Weedy and cultivated rice both evolved from wild Oryza species.
