My postings here have fallen off quite considerably these past few years, as it seems so many other blogs tend to trend over time. It is not, however, because of a lessened interest in typewriters; you can always trust me to be blindly addicted to that wonderful Grand Rapids enterprise which I always do post about, when I do indeed post. But life certainly changes. What was once free-time has been taken up by helping out at ETCetera (the Early Typewriter Collectors Association for those few of you not in the know, go check them out), advancements in my career (there's nothing quite like ..read more

Fox word counter

In the operational manual for Fox visible desktop models, in a section towards the back which covers add-ons and other extra items you could buy, one will find that Fox offered a word counter for their machines; Understandably, this was likely seldom purchased, and I have yet to hear of any surviving machines having one attached. However, with just a bit of quick sleuthing, I believe I've located the counter in question (or at least a very similar model), as advertised by the original manufacturer; It seems that Veeder was the established counter-mechanism manufacturer of the age. A Hammond Multiplex

Woah. That crazy Fox dude is back. I wonder what he's gone and done now? What he's gone and done is started speaking in the 3rd person, as well as purchase a Hammond Multiplex! For all my many (see: Few) years of typewriter collecting, I've only previously owned one other Hammond, a few years back. I figure that's saying something, when I've managed to come across machines of far greater scarcity such as a Daugherty, a Masspro, etc etc. I had bought an enclosed version of the Multiplex, with the front cover that protects all the innards of the machine. And for some reason, I just could not ..read more

Fox Ephemera and other Miscellanea

Being lucky enough to add a bit more to my ephemera collection this past month, I thought I would take the time to share my Fox collection with you all. Not my actual typewriters, but the ephemera and miscellanea I have been able to gather together or learn about in my time being unhinged about that little ol' Michigan company. Some collectors like to keep these sorts of things confidential, for reasons ranging from having pride in being the only one "In the Know", or because of the sometimes astronomical cost to acquire certain set pieces, and the associated feelings that come from that. Somehow, it's been a few months since my last post. I'm going to blame poltergeists, time-traveling Deloreans, and the Soviet Union. Anyhow, onward and upward! Maybe sideward. I've decided to expand my antiquing into the next relatable thing; tools. Preferably, antique tools I can use to restore other, antique-ier tools and items (and use for around the house if necessary to boot, why not). I'm going to shoot for finding and restoring one tool a week and, most hand tools being considerably simpler than a typewriter, that challenge is most doable. I've already learned some new tricks from clean ..read more
