In the spirit of the transparency that Black Girls Cheer was built upon, the Black Girls Cheer team would like to address some recent developments with our founder, Dr. Sharita Mathis Richardson. Sharita is currently in federal confinement and is serving out a sentence handed down by federal authorities.   As I’m sure most can imagine, these circumstances are a challenge from both a professional and, for many of us, a very personal standpoint. Sharita is first and foremost a human being, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. As such, we understand the impact that these ci ..read more

An Open Letter to the Cheer Community

There is a huge elephant in the room and that room is cheerleading. In 2015, we decided to give that elephant a voice in the form of Black Girls Cheer. We are often asked by the community at large…WHY?   Well, the conversations swirling around the community regarding the outrage voiced surrounding the murder of George Floyd, among others, are clear indicators of that why. Cheer is life, or so many say. And if you believe that, then you know that we cannot dissect a person’s lived experiences and separate that from a space where they spend a large majorit ..read more

The Best of Both Worlds

As an All-Star and High School Cheerleader, I’ve gotten questions like, “How are you doing this?”, ” Aren’t they the same exact thing?”, or ” Are your coaches ok with this?” In my opinion, no they aren’t the same, and yes the share different qualities, but there’s something about both of them that brings out the best in me.     High School Cheer      When I tried out for high school cheer, I only thought of it as an extracurricular activity. I also thought that I wouldn’t be able to commit to high school cheer because of my commitment to all-star cheer. Which meant mis ..read more

I Have Alopecia, but Alopecia Doesn’t Have Me!

In March 2019, I began to rapidly lose my hair. There were no signs and no warning. It just all started to shed. And there was nothing I could do to stop it. The last few months have been a challenge unlike anything I have ever faced. But, in the end, this is my journey and I know my #faith and my #family will see me through. I hope that sharing my story with others will empower other young ladies battling with Alopecia and will let them know that they are not alone ?                         ~Laila Houston IG: TeamLayBay The ..read more

Comeback on 100!

Exactly one year ago I landed funny doing a specialty tumbling pass. It hurt, BAD! My ankle was on fire. I remember one of the moms at the gym running over with ice b/c she saw me turn my ankle from the parents viewing area. Looking back, now, I know, that I made many mistakes after that. My first mistake was not telling my parents or coaches that I was injured for fear that I would lose my spot on the Level 5 team I had worked so hard to make. Second, after finally telling my parents & seeing a doctor was continuing to practice & compete on the injured ankle long after my doctor t ..read more

What if you didn’t get chosen to participate in things? How would you feel if you didn’t get a chance to showcase your talent?  What if you weren’t a “favorite” and always had to be in the background instead of in a spot you earned or deserved?   Hi BGC Family! My name is Demi  and I am from Houston, TX. I’m currently in my 9th year of cheering and still as excited about the sport today as I was when I first started.  Cheering has given me a lot of opportunities to learn, grow and help others. There are many positive and fun moments with being a cheerleader. But, there are ..read more

Staying Strong When Everything Goes Wrong
Black Girls Cheer

When cheering, it is easy to become discouraged. Especially when it comes to trying a new tumble pass or even trying elite stunts with a new group at a pivotal point in the season. Never get to stressed, just remember that you have all of your teammates and coaches, and that you aren’t alone.   “Cheerleading is not an individual sport. You have teammates. Take advantage of having friends that understand you.“     It can also become easy to forget why we cheer. Do not let cheer become a place where you go to stress. It should be the complete opposite for you. Always remember tha ..read more
