Today was a cloudy, windy and foggy day, these conditions made lookout's work harder. We headed east following their indications and we found a small group of common dolphins.  Photo by Mariana Silva This is one of our resident species and easy to recognize because of the yellow coloration in the sides of their body. Photo by Rui Santos Then we continued the trip with the hope to find other species but the visibility got worse. Further out we spotted a huge number of fishing boats. These traditional fishing boats were trying to catch squid and also tunas.  Our guests could see t ..read more

After a light rain in the morning, the sun came out, and we went to the sea with high hopes to see some whales and dolphins.  After a bit of searching we found a very small and calm group of the resident bottlenose dolphins, although they were not interacting too much, we were able to spot some very distinct individuals what made the sighting very interesting.  Then we received indication from our lookouts that there were some big animals further away from the coast, everybody got excited with that, but not a bit as excited as when we got there and saw an amazing group of Fin wha ..read more

The first month of 2020 is over! Normally they say that January is the harder month of year, but for us it was a month full of surprises! The winter time with lots of rainy days just allowed us to go out 13 days. And in total we encountered 7 different cetacean species. In most of these trips we saw at least 2 different species per trip and our record was in 16th January when we saw 4 species in just one single trip!! Our resident common dolphins didn’t disappoint us as they were the most sighted species in this month with a 85% of frequency. On our observation ranking the second most ..read more

Today the sea was calm and was a pleasure to navigate enjoying the breeze of the ocean. We left Ponta Delgada's marina with one of our zodiacs. It didn't take too long for one of our lookouts to find a group of common dolphins. They were curious with our boat, approaching constantly and showing us their beautiful coloration.  The lookout also spotted a bigger animal in the area, but the sighting was fast and unexpected and we couldn't find the animal again. We went further out, with the hope of finding sperm whales. We tried using our hydrophone twice but still no luck ..read more

Today was a day full of guests, so we went out with our two catamarans and a zodiac.  To start our trip we had our residents, the common dolphins and although they were approaching the boat in the beginning, soon they lost interest in us so we decided to leave them.  Our next sighting wasn't a very happy one, unfortunately, a dead sperm whale was floating near the coast, and although this was a sad scenario it's important to remember that this whale will now create an ecosystem for other organisms that will now feed on it.  The rest of our morning trip was filled with ..read more

Photo: Iñaki CaboClear sky and lots of sun welcomed us to the sea today. Not long after leaving the marina, just outside Lagoa, we came across the first pod of our resident Common Dolphins. Since this pod was in a feeding frenzy they gave little attention to our boat, so we continued our trip heading a bit further away from the coast and towards the centre of the island where we encountered another pod of common dolphins, this one was bigger and much more interested in us, displaying a relaxed posture and interacting more with the boat. After a while with this group, we received in ..read more

Although today was a foggy morning, the sea conditions were perfect to go out and enjoy the ocean. Soon after leaving the Ponta Delgada's harbour we found our first group of common dolphins. This species is resident in our archipelago, which means we can sight them all year round, in different seasons. They were very calm and socializing between them. From our bow, you could even listen to their whistles. Following the advice of our lookouts, we moved to the area where we sighted a humpback whale a couple of days ago. Unfortunately today we had no luck and after some time sear ..read more

São Miguel woke up as a summer day and today was our first trip of February! In the morning, we went to swim with dolphins. Two of our boats went out to spend some time with our resident common dolphins. They were travelling and quite spread out so we could see a lot of different pods.  After, we started the afternoon trip with the same dolphins but they were quite elusive so it was a little difficult to see them.  But suddenly, one of our lookouts saw the jump of a Humpback whale! So we went to the area where this baleen whale was seen, we waited, we waited and we kept on waiting. A ..read more

What an amazing Sunday! We went out on our whale and dolphin watching trip with probably the calmest sea conditions this year, and just outside Ponta Delgada, encountered a small group of our resident common dolphins in a resting behaviour, and therefore, not interacting much with the boat.  We received information from our lookouts to head East of the island were we found a huge pod of bottlenose dolphins, a couple hundred at least, some of them were feeding but others showed a lot of interest in the boat and interacted with us making it a quite exciting moment. The pinnacle of the ..read more

Other dolphins entangled in plastic in São Miguel

On this Saturday we managed to go out on a whale watching trip and luckily we found a huge group of bottlenose dolphins that were feeding once we arrived but shortly after got interested in the boat! For the entire time we had dozens of dolphins surrounding us, jumping, socializing, spyhopping and entertaining our guests in the best way possible!  Something sad got the attention of the crew, that was plastic stucked to the dorsal fin of two dolphins. This is a problem that we’ve been often noticing, the presence of plastic. Hopefully everyone starts reducing the use of this material instead of ..read more
