I have no financial ties to this company and if you’d like to see my photos of me 1 day post procedure, please see our Instagram @conciergedermatologyandlaser.  The whole science and experience of skin repair and maintenance has changed rapidly in the past 2 decades. It continues to progress. Thermomechanical energy may be a new way to accomplish skin rejuvenation. All the technologies below rely on energy/heat transfer which then creates a very selective, controlled skin injury that stimulates repair, in a healthy way, to rebuild skin. The key to this is the selective and controlled part ..read more

Why an eye cream and which one?

If it’s just moisture you’re looking for around your eyes, then you are right, of course, that moisturizers are fine for that. Remember that the skin around the eye area has almost no oil glands, so it’s particularly susceptible to wrinkling. But what if we want to prevent loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and over all skin texture of the eye area? Lasers can help for sure, but we’re not going to do those frequently due to the downtime. The key word here is prevention and if you start using an eye cream or two when you’re young, you won’t regret that decision. Why an eye cream? Look at your famil ..read more

SkinVive – Worth It or Hype?

I truly wish I had a definitive answer for this, but… I think there will be one in the next 6-9 months as this gets put into more general use. If you haven’t seen or paid attention to the marketing hype (Allergan) on this product, you’re probably wondering what this is. It’s a hyaluronic acid injectable product in a syringe, but it’s not really a filler.  It instead acts as a long-lasting moisturizer; long-lasting as in about 6 months. Because the hyaluronic acid attracts water, its claim is it provides a dewy, youthful glow to skin that’s more lasting than a facial or a cream moisturizer ..read more

Facial Massage — Does it really help?
Skintour » Anti Aging

This one will be shorter than most posts because there’s not a lot of science or to say on this. Except…that for some reason people love these posts. ? I’ve sometimes wondered if it’s because we all really, truly want a magic wand for skin. In other words, something really simple, inexpensive, effective, and that works consistently. It’s the “grail” of skincare. ? Cons for facial massage: It will not tighten your skin. There’s quite of bit of science proving that so far only building deep collagen, removing skin completely (like a facelift), or improving elasticity does this. Elasticity is th ..read more

CO2 Laser With Other Options vs Alternative Choices

Hi Debbi – Thank you! I think that if you’ve done well in the past with CO2, there’s good reason to think that you might get a good result again. I usually vote for doing full face so there’s some tightening everywhere and reduction of wrinkles. There is recovery time anyway, and it makes it less likely you’ll see a zone of demarcation between the treated and untreated area. The CO2 on the rest of the face can be done more lightly if you prefer. Why not get maximal results and it’s usually not much more expensive. Laser assisted drug delivery (LADD) is a hot research topic. These wonderful sci ..read more

Can I repair my damaged skin barrier? Part 2/2
Skintour » Anti Aging
by Brandith Irwin

So, Part II is on repairing your barrier layer if you think it’s been compromised. If you think you may have an allergy or sensitivity to ingredients in skin care products, then you may need your dermatologist to help you define these allergies better. Please remember that skin diseases compromise the barrier. If you have an undiagnosed or untreated skin disease, the measure below are less likely to help. Your skin barrier is your outer dead layer (stratum corneum), and the epidermis where there are all sorts of lipids, cells and the natural gel between the cells which is partly hyaluronic aci ..read more

Can I repair my damaged skin barrier? Part 1/2

Thank you for this question. I think that many struggle with sorting out what is causing sensitive skin and then what to do about it. I’m going to assume that by “sensitive skin” you mean your skin seems to be easily irritated by skincare products, flushing, scrubs, wind, cold, and other environmental exposures. If I’ve misunderstood you, please write me back to correct this.  ? Part 2 will go into how to repair and how to think about laser procedures and this issue. Before going further, there are many causes of sensitive skin, and chronic (not an acute sunburn) sun damage is generally n ..read more

Crepey skin on the body. Is there anything to do? Part 2/3

Crepey skin on the body! We’re fit, healthy and aging. What can we do? Part I was on prevention Part II is on specific body areas and newer RF and laser tech. And Part 3 will be on costs, and what may be possible in the near future. The below are my current opinions, based on a lot of experience and also treatments on myself. I’m going to an advanced laser and RF (radiofrequency) conference in August, so I’ll update this after that again, most likely. ? Please keep in mind that nothing is perfect, and we are all individuals so individual responses will vary. Not to mention the equipment and ..read more

Crepey skin on the body. Is there anything to do? Part 1 of 3
Skintour » Anti Aging

Crepey skin is usually skin that’s more fragile too so I decided to put these questions together; their issues are similar. This post is to help understand the factors contributing to crepey and thin skin but, let’s focus first on prevention. Part 2 will be on specific body areas and the new RF and laser technologies. Part 3 will be on what is possible now, and what may be possible in the near future. Many people think now that crepey skin on the body is just due to sun/UV damage. While that does contribute, it’s not the whole story. The characters in this story are sun/UV damage, intrinsic ag ..read more
